A quick iCloud question

Hi, just a quick question (and warning) on iCloud, I'd google but my internet is too slow now. We have been chewing through the data on out data sims at a rate of a gig every couple of days with minimal use so I'm wondering if it's iCloud using the data. I had photo sharing set up on 5 devices, handy when you take a picture on the iPhone and it magically appears on the PC and iPad as well, but...not so handy if it's using data. It only transfers when connected to wifi, but we set up one phone as a personal hotspot and share it's internet with all devices.
I guess I'd assumed it does it via wifi but on second thought I guess it uploads it to iCloud then downloads it individually to each device. Making a 10Mb picture use 50Mb of data, or a 100Mb video clip use 500Mb!
I've since disabled iCloud sharing, but just wanted to confirm this is the way it works?

Re: A quick iCloud question

... on iOS devices: New photos that you take automatically upload to your photo stream when you leave the Camera app and connect to Wi-Fi. My Photo Stream doesn't push photos over cellular connections.

... on Macs: Any new photos you import to iPhoto or Aperture automatically upload when you connect to Wi-Fi or Ethernet.

(see My Photo Stream FAQ).

Regards

Yep that's the way cloud storage works. It goes up to the cloud and back down to every device. It's not a good idea anywhere you have high MB internet charges.

Re: A quick iCloud question

All the devices that connect to your hotspot assume they are on WIFI.

Re: A quick iCloud question

Yep Monte, I've run into the same thing.

I turned off..

1. Photostream on all devices (make sure you do it in iPhone on the Mac as well).
2. Photo sharing on all devices.
3. APP Auto updates.
4. In settings you can view what apps can use data and turn all those off as well.
5. iCloud Backup.
6. I changed all Mail, Contacts, etc, to manual (don't use push).

Regards,
Simon

It's really frustrating that everybody wants to see your data and invade your privacy. They could design things to be more efficient but they want to data mine you and they want you addicted to big data.

Re: A quick iCloud question

If you turn off any of your iCloud sync/backups over wifi, just be sure to regularly sync your iPad or iPhone to a computer. I have a lot of customers who forget this part then end up losing everything when their phone goes in the drink. Set a reminder in your calendar to sync to your laptop.
