| A new set of instruments, cheap!
So I have now secured a complete set of new instruments for Insatiable, and without breaking the bank! I purchased them through e-bay, over a period of about 4 months, all from the same vendor. The gear is all from the "NASA Clipper" range, so each instrument has the same size & display unit. I have got: 1. Speed / log, including transducer 2. Depth sounder (with in-hull fitting, rather than thru-hull) 3. GPS repeater 4. Wind speed & direction, including masthead unit 5. Close-hauled wind repeater (not really needed, but once a racer...) The total cost for all of the above was only $US 740 ($AU 975) ![]() My current instruments (Yazaki; over 20 years old) are mounted in a box just forward of the companionway. I have started to build a new box to house the new instruments. I got some marine ply off-cuts for free from my local hardware/timber store, so the whole operation hasn't cost me too much. |

Hi Weylan: Good job on saving the money. How long did it take to acquire all the different instruments? What category did you search on Ebay. I recently saw a Jordan Series drouge for sale there but didn't think it would fit my boat -- too big. I'm thinkg of getting some back ups for my 20 year old B&G Hydras. That way if something goes wrong I can just replace it.

Hello Charlie I purchased the instruments over a period of about 4 months. Instruments are strangely difficult to find on Ebay... I generally just looked at "Boat Parts & Accesories" in the "Cars, bikes & boats" section. Link: http://cars.listings.ebay.com.au/Boa...eZmeQ3afQ3acat The Nasa instruments I bought were all purchased from Online Marine Mart, who were very good to deal with. Link: http://stores.ebay.com.au/Online-Mar...Q3amesstQQtZkm and I also kept an eye on CourierMe, because they had quite a range of NavMAn instruments, although I didn't end up buying any. I've done some good shopping on eBay though not all eBay deals are that great. You need to work at it. MY GPS is older but quite nice and I now have a twin unit ready to install should it become required. I also just got (later in the morning) a new PDA by Mio (a P350) that I got a great deal on (still mnay left) that has a built in GPS and runs nice.
