27 mhz Radios in Oz

Hi all

I have pulled out my radios for the refit of my boat. I have quality VHF, HF radios and an older 27 meg jobbie - AWA Teleradio that looks in very good condition. Is there any reason to put this radio back after the refit? Are 27 meg radios still used in Oz in a meaningful way?

If you have a good VHF you don't need 27 meg. It's still used for broadcasting weather alerts, and some of the VMR stations have them but they are mostly designed for smaller boats that don't or can't fit VHF.

Your radio needs will depend on what what you do with your boat - fishing, estuary, coastal, bluewater etc.

You've answered your own question by using the word "meaningful": the majority of UHF traffic (certainly in populated areas) is just rubbish chatter.

I'd say use the panel space and AH for something more useful - maybe a second back-up VHF since they're so cheap, or a modern HF, or AIS.
