12 Volt Airhorns on Sailboats

And suggestions for a quality Airhorn?

I have such a surplus of 12 volt power, it would be great to blast at the Yahoos running at high speeds through the anchorage, make em spill their beer.
Not to mention the great safety aspects of such a device.

I don't have one, but apparently train horns can be had. Talking about scaring someone, everybody knows what a train sounds like. They are big though, real big. I know someone that has one on his truck, mounted underneath the truck

It's not the size f the air horn , it's the size of the compressor that counts.

Honestly just Google train air horns, I just did and you can get all kinds of kits. The one I know about is an honest to God train air horn, I have no idea about the compressor used, but would think it would be the size of the air tank that would matter unless of course you want multiple blasts. I can tell you when you hear a honest to God train horn go off right behind you in traffic, you'll almost mess your pants

I just put in an el cheapo 12v horn from my local chandler so I can gently ask those confused souls who look like they're going to wander into my path what their intentions are.

It's loud enough to make my crew jump. Haven't used it on a confused soul yet.

Someone on here said they run their fog signals during the night time in coastal waters to wake up sleeping fishermen. It sounds like a slick idea but whoever's trying to get sleep (on the sailboat) might be a bit pissed off at that.

Crew are cautioned to stay behind the Kahlenberg horns when they blast.

This boat we bought has a couple air horns on the cabin roof, hooked up via copper tubing to a compressor. Pain in the butt. I'd like to move the horns up under the radar, on the mast, to get them away from our own ears and to increase their range to other ears. But I don't want to run air lines on the boat. I started looking into the air horns at Defender, and see they have both electric and pneumatic. The thing is, the electric ones have an output around 122 dB. The compressor driven horns are around 10 dB higher. And as we all know, each three dB in gain is twice the output. So basically the compressor horns are three times or more louder than the electric ones that look just like them, correct?

I have not heard this before... (self amused by pun)

Sound db is a logarithmic scale... so the fact you state CAN ONLY be at one particular level...

About the only experience I have is owning a db meter... The rest I claim ignorance!

I once had a motorcycle with an air horn that sounded like a train. It was a self contained unit with its own compressor built in. Very small but I don't think it was stainless steel.

I have run several large sailboats with Kalenbergs. In each case we had to install a smaller horn that we could actually use since the Kalenbergs would blow the crew off the foredeck! Those are really loud honkers!!

Our boat came equipped with a very small Maseratti air compressor and a horn mounted under the radome on the mizzen mast. I've found it useful. If the compressor ever dies, I'm going to get a whole new system from Buell.

I hope I never have to share an anchorage or marina with somebody who has an air horn like any of the ones described above. You may get a thrill out of startling somebody you consider to be a jerk. Everyone else hates it.
