Re: Your Boat Relationship

I feel kind of cheap and low now because I just USE my boat. I maintain it, but in the end I'm just a user!

Re: Your Boat Relationship

I have loved a boat, unfortunately didn't own it, but had unfettered use.

When the owner needed to sell, I couldn't raise the funds and she left my life forever.

Unfortunately I have liked (and used) my subsequent boats but that first love is hard to beat.

We are not on talking terms right now. I have been working all summer and feel i have neglected her. She will need lots of expensive gifts all winter to forgive me.

Commit! Hell I already pay her room and board, upkeep, plastic surgery to keep her young looking, component transplants to keep her alive, take her on vacations with me, etc.

What else does she want?

Re: Your Boat Relationship

It can also depend on how much sweat equity you have invested, weathered together, miles under the keel. These add up and in my opinion the boat takes on a sort of personality of sorts and you relate to this due to the time, energy and places traveled.

Re: Your Boat Relationship

With my Hunter, also love-hate. I love cruising, but as an absentee owner, it's both expensive and a pain to store and maintain a boat that is well over 1000 miles from where I live that is not in use most of the time.

Mostly love with the boat Beneteau I owne in charter, since it had none of the maintenance headaches or costs my other boats have had. Taking it at the end of charter and sailing it back to the U.S. is something I both look forward to and see as a bit of a PITA at the same time.

Re: Your Boat Relationship

Is it a question of sanity to love and inanimate object?
Sanity as an opinion is so over rated.
Is a boat an inanimate object.
I love to sail and be on the ocean,
therefore is it wrong to love what makes that possible?

If loveing you is wrong, I dont' want to do right..

I am loosing my grip on reality, a symptom of too much terra firma.

Don't feel bad, people pay me good money to do what they want on mine for the day. I even let people sleep with her if she is taking them out for a good time the next day. She doesn't even mind if I send an other woman to spend the night with her. Charter boat captain or pimp.......it's a fuzzy line.

I've loved all of them. Keeping things simple kept the costs down and the love up.
Had some tears when the first one was gone.
This time when I trade up it's for two ppl, and barring any accidents I plan on this being the last major purchase of my life. *knock on wood*

Re: Your Boat Relationship

At the conclusion of an all day, look in every locker, check every instrument, run every engine survey, I was sitting on the port settee and the surveyor sat on the starboard side while quietly documenting his final observations for the all-important report. Risking his ire at an interruption, I quietly asked "is she a good investment?" Without stopping or even looking up from his legal pad, he said " she's a lousy investment...if you want a good investment, buy CDs!"

After what seemed an eternity with my heart pounding..(realize I'm already in love with this lady), I again interrupted him and asked "is she a good boat?". The surveyor put his pen down and looked up meeting my eyes and said "yes, she's a good boat." It was all I could do contain my excitement! And now two years later, my wife and I still get butterflies as we approach the marina. Yeah, first loves will do that.

Re: Your Boat Relationship

I live aboard. Total out of pocket living expenses here at the marina are $600 per month. A one bedroom here in DC would cost in the $2000 range. The boat is kinda wide, kinda slow, has an easy motion and is very forgiving. I can't find all those qualities in one woman.

Re: Your Boat Relationship

Like an old friend, we check in with each other from time to time, but we live in different cities (400 miles) and so the distance thing can wear. There's just nothing else that affords me this kind of disconnect, so I keep paying the mortgage, insurance and taxes and have a free mooring up a creek. If anything I'm building some equity, but during these busy times at the farm, I hardly think about her.

After I finish corn I get some time down there in a couple weeks. For a guy like me, it is a huge investment and bordering on irresponsible. I told my wife I was thinking of selling last week, she couldn't believe it. She smacked that down in a heartbeat.....that makes me feel good. If she's still in, and I dragged her along in the first place, then I'm all in.

My poor kids. But they know it is a great counterpoise after a bunch of 90 hour weeks on the farm, so even my savvy sixteen year old no longer complains about my very expensive avocation.

Thanks for reminding me I had a boat.
