Wooden boat owners?

Who on this forum sails a wooden boat?

And I mean a real wooden boat. Not wood wrapped in fiberglass (no offense).

Re: Wooden boat owners?

Does it count if I have previously owned a "proper wooden boat ".

And what about one half wrapped in fibreglass (current boat)?

Re: Wooden boat owners?

Well,

Keel Me,

My boat is strip planked western red cedar, but being epoxy and glass coated in and out doesn't meet your definition. But, being of nature's carbon fiber, I still think she is a timber boat. Of course not planked and no help--our friends had a timber boat lose the garboard plank on one of them--and it was a very sad store.

I do think good timber boats can be made and maintained.....and far longer than grp, for that matter.

But no, don't count us among your timber cruising boats. Our nautical mileage is irrelevant, because much of it was in a grp boat.

Ann

Re: Wooden boat owners?

I'm sure both of your boats are great. I'm just curious if anyone on the forum is cruising in a proper wooden boat. Or do all of the wooden boat people hang out elsewhere?

I own a GRP boat myself. But my heart aches for an old wooden boat. I haven't owned a wooden boat since the 70's but I would trade my HR49 right now for a proper wooden boat....with approval of my wife, of course.

Re: Wooden boat owners?

I have a good friend that owns a 1964 Buchanan 38... it’s a one off built from mahogany, finished bright and beautifully restored... he hasn’t made a decision to sell but over whiskey he has considered it... if you are interested I could discuss it with him... I’m sure he would take an HR as part of a deal... as I can’t imagine him boatless...

The thread title begs the question:

Did Geppetto ever give a boat to Pinocchio?

Hello,

I "think" mine is a proper wooden boat...

1940 Charles D. Mower C-Class Sloop - LOA 30'

It runs very well and keeps the water out

It is my second "all wood" boat and am loving it - but have only owned it a few months so am still learning about it and working on a long term plan to maintain it.

The boat has a long history and the previous owner (91 years old and just stopped sailing her) had kept it in good condition.

Take care!

Re: Wooden boat owners?

Our hull is timber, 2 inch thick hardwood
But our decks and superstructure are ply/epoxy/glass.

She does sail quit well in 30+ knots............at anchor.

Re: Wooden boat owners?

Hello.

We have a 1936 double ended ex pilot cutter built in Norway. Have owned it the past 12 years and cruised the past 3. Currently in the Azores.
Built with double 5" sawn frames and 2" oak planking, Pine deck.
Gaff cutter rig.

Works very well for us as a cruising/liveaboard boat for us.
