Where to get boat insurance?

Where is the best place to get comprehensive boat insurance and towing insurance without breaking the bank?

My current "liability only" policy is about to expire. A couple online quotes I got ranged from $1,200-$1,500/year...ouch! And some places require a marine survey in order to get comprehensive insurance.

Where would you recommend getting insured through? I am in San Diego CA, I've been boating for 1 year, and I have a 35ft 1985 Yorktown sailboat.

thank you kindly for any help

I highly recommend you deal with an independent agent who can shop the market for you. I use Peter Tyson in Vero Beach Florida. He has been a big help. He put me with Chub and they were great when I had a claim.

you might try Boat US , which is Geico, I suspect that your rates are high because you are in California and your lack of experience. You might get some discounts if you take courses , suggest you ask a broker. My FULL $35K coverage is $1100/yr in Florida. For liability only its less than $100 / yr

Towboatus was around 200 year here in NCarolina, But when I got my $200 Geico liability policy , towboatus was included.

Re: Where to get boat insurance?

I’d second the suggestion for BoatUS. I went to them, and they hooked me up with Geico. Premium was competitive, and I was able to add a liability addendum required by my marina. Geico also has the option of doing monthly payments, tho there’s a couple-of-bucks extra fee per month for that. But no complaints. Easy access online to the policy and its documents.
