Where in the World Do You Put these Silly Boards ?

My 3 little companionway boards are the bane of my existence. They don't fit in the oven, they don't fit in the sink, if I leave them on the floor they'll bruise our ankles, they're bigger than all the drawers and they make lumps under the mattresses! Can't leave them out on deck or they'll turn into frog rafts or gull condos.
Where in the hell do you put yours? Why didn't the boat designer think of this?

Under the cushions on the banquette.

On the quarter berths.

Between the fridge and the bulkhead.

You build something to hold them near the companionway. When you need them you'll want them right away...they will no longer be "the bane of your existence." And the lower one or two need to be permanently tied to the boat and tie or latch in place.

Re: Where in the world do you put these silly boards?

Have you ever seen a roll top desk? Double sided teak slats on canvas set into a track into the saloon.
You lose one inch of headroom and have to "feed" the track with lanolin or wax occasionally.
Works a lot like a "Roller Door" and surprisingly strong if you are "pooped".
The most expensive part is the fabrication of the tracks but the convenience is great.
If your companionway is suitable it is worth the cost and effort.

You can buy alloy roller/slats for this purpose. See them on windows and storage bins all the time. Try roller door/window manufacturers.

Plus you have next to nil maintinence with Aluminium rollers but for "seaworthiness" I would recomend Timber slats.

Re: Where in the world do you put these silly boards?

My IP31 has a rack similar to a teak magazine rack attached to a narrow bulkhead beside the companionway ladder. The 3 boards sit vertically in the rack sound and secure. Easy to insert and easy to remove. I also keep my trash can behind the ladder which keeps it out of the way and well secure from tipping or sliding. Just a thought...

We have a rack behind the aft companionway ladder that holds both boards.

DOJ, i saw self stowing washboards on an old Camper & Nicholson 40 something and was quite impressed, a nice option if you have the layout that can use it.

Re: Where in the world do you put these silly boards?

Over the years of sailing I made many improves to about everthing, with my boards we varnished and then bagged them and stored in the bottom of a locker. The one thing we did which made life nicer was to fab comp.way with 1/4" clear plexi sheet that would let light in, see out and let you vue out in storms, I made a holder in cockpit which we could slide the sheet into when not needed. We also had a screen made to fit for tropic cruising. I know this compounds storage problem, but it did make life easier.

Re: Where in the World Do You Put these Silly Boards ?

last boat I had with hatch boards, they lived in the cabin, secured in a canvas pouch secured with velco to the side of the Galley cabinet at the head end of the Qberth. They barely took up any room at all, and were easy to get out if needed.
