Re: When do you abandon ship?

Someone mentioned having a not very functional cell phone waterproof box. We had good luck with Otterbox. They float and as grandkid found out, does keep water out at least to 10 feet underwater(dont ask). Not sure they are made by otters, but work. Bit clunky, so probably best for cell phone storage while on board.

the captain must go down with the ship

How far will a sinking ship take you?

Yes, a time honored tradition. You should not go sailing if you are not willing to sink with your ship. Preferably standing at the helm saluting the flag as you descend into Davy Jones' locker.

Captain can go down with the ship, but if I'm sitting in the life raft he had better swim up! Or I swear, I will kill him!

Wow what a lovely catamaran in that video! It's one of my fears, sinking!

I have less fear about sinking than falling out of the air, being hit by an oncoming drunk driver, or being shot by some lunatic. BTW: most sailboats up to about 45 feet can be made to stay on the surface even if the hull is torn apart. Inflatable, automatic float bags!! There are even parachutes for small planes nowadays.

So all we got to worry about are drunk lunatics. So now go out and enjoy the presidential elections.

It's fire that scares me, and really, really big waves.

Im afraid of the big waves too. Its an evil facination to watch Perfect Storm. It reminds me of my dreams as a child, huge terrifying waves and no control what so ever.

Although the movie exaggerated the storm, and towering 100 foot crashing seas exist in only a few places in the world, most of those big mounds of water are quite sailable, as proven by the Westsail boat that sailed itself through the storm. The advantage of a full, deep keel is the boat will dig into the water as the wave passes beneath it. Its after all not moving water, but moving waves. The water just goes up and down, unless you are in a strong current.
Many a time we thought we were going to be tipped over by a big open ocean wave only to have the boat rise up and down with no problems. Of course we normally do not point the boat perpendicular to giant waves but about 30 degrees off the perpendicular to them.
