Angry Whelp...that was a bad day at the office, truck stolen

We ran up to Tucson yesterday to pickup our mail and get some paperwork we needed done with a US notary. Everything went well and we were looking forward to getting back to the boat today.

Unfortunately our truck was stolen out of the hotel parking lot. Along with 1,000 bucks worth of new gear we just picked up!

The bad part is that Jim had to get a certified copy of his passport and that document was in the truck . Do we need to worry about identity theft with that document? Do we need to cancel his passport and redo it?

We are looking for a used car to get us back. We have the dog so we can't just take the bus.

We are bummed!

If you were in a foreign country when the certified copy was stolen, I would recommend you start by going to a US consulate or embassy to report the theft. They can put you in touch with or transfer the matter to homeland security and other agencies. The main danger, I think, would be someone using the certified copy's information to forge a passport.

DAMN.
you guys have all the luck.
good thing you were in usa where it is so safe.
contact the passport office and talk with them.they will probably tell you to get new ones, do what they say. we all here know nada.. let them know was stolen .
damn. i HOPE you had copies to cut the replacement time and have passport number....
same with each document you lost in the theft.
i hope you called in the theft and itemized all goods removed from your possession complete with prices and if you still have em, receipts.
all the best to you kids. this soooo supersucks.

Re: Whelp...that was a bad day at the office, truck stolen

Back in 2008 while I was running a Bernina seminar at a hotel in Tucson, a couple who were participants had their fairly new Toyota pickup truck stolen out of the hotel parking lot. It had a new ten thousand dollar sewing machine inside too.

The cops said it was probably out in the desert being disassembled in a chop shop.
They said it happens every day there, sometimes more than one.
Hotel parking lots are their favorite places from which to grab cars and especially trucks.

Sorry to hear about it.

Loss of story in the telling....

You drive into the USA from Mexico, leaving the boat in Mexico, had you truck and passports stolen, and now want to get back to your boat in Mexico?

Holy administration, Batman!

That's just terrible.

Hope something nice happens to cheer you up. Or the police find the truck quickly, which sometimes happens.

and tell em you need to get back home. good luck kids. this is abject suckery.

I'm in Tucson, if you need a hand I'll do what I can. I'm working the next couple of days, but send me a PM and I'll try to help you out.

I would assume? If a certified copy of a passport has been obtained, it came from an embassy not Quick Copy and the theft has been reported to all appropriate agencies. I would watch my credit report. Flying you may get parts of your body checked similar to a prostate exam..

One tip from Canada that I can offer is take pictures of all your documents and email them to yourself along with phone numbers to call just in case.
Makes a loss a little easier to take. Sorry for yours.

Oh, SeaDreaming, I'm so sorry this happened to you. Odd thing is, I woke up this morning thinking I was going to ask you to write a thread summarizing your experiences so far, well, I guess not such a good idea right now.

You both have overcome a lot and are resourceful. Good luck - it'll get better.

I'm thinking about you guys. Hoping things are going as well as possible. When you have a moment to catch your breath, let us know that you are doing OK. I hope you are not in a bureaucracy nightmare.

Maybe your comments pacify where you have to live now but please consider where the parts ended up...not in the US.
