What's your boats name?

I just bought a new to me boat. Love the boat, hate the name. So I am going to challenge the Gods kf misfortune and rename her. I spent some time trying to find a good name and came up with "Mambo."
Id be interested to hear the names of boats here, particularly those that you chose yourself.

Re: What's your boats name?

My first boat was "House Buoy" named by my wife because she was still working and I had retired.

Our current boat is "Run To You" was the name when we bought her and didn't want to change because when we changed to House Buoy, we had nothing but trouble and strange happenings.

I like mambo. Not a common name but cool. Also a surf brand so lots of images available for the boat name, as well as crew tshirts and caps 🍻

Our boat name, Sephina is part of the Argo Navis constellation, used to navigate by ancient Mariners, and also a combination of our middle names Joseph/Sabrina.

Re: What's your boats name?

I have owned several that absolutely cried out to be changed, including 'Norsaya' (yuk) and DUZN'T NAG'. Our family choice then became 'Heartbeat' as in ' In a Heartbeat' because my American wife used to say it constantly (but rarely did It) We had three 'Heartbeats'. Our first US bought Boat was 'Down Time' which we retained as it was painted on and would be too hard to remove. Our current one is 'Roxanne' which again is Ok to keep as it is not too yucky and it also is painted on, in several places, KISS keep it simple stupid rules!

We never had bad luck related to changing a boat name, quite the reverse in fact, as those boats we did change gave us many years of pure pleasure.

Re: What's your boats name?

It started with a pretty little 26' double ended gaff rigger. I named her "Mandolin" because she was a small, well crafted instrument that made beautiful music.
I'm currently on the 4th boat of the same name.

Re: What's your boats name?

The former name was Touch of Grey. The boat wore it well -- neglected, morose and rarely sailed, but with a touch of something grand just beneath the surface. I renamed her Kynntana, my mother's stage name in the circus. She was an aerialist and had moved to a foreign country at a very young age to follow her lifelong dream. Kynntana means star in the Malagasy language though the spelling is probably not accurate (anyone know?). As to whether it's bad luck to change a boat's name, that's something your own conscious has to reconcile. I know my boat is much happier in her new life and new name, and good luck seems to sail with us, even when something bad happens Much like this article from Time reports: How to Attract Good Luck: 4 Secrets Backed by Research (or Google the words if you'd rather not click on a link).

Re: What's your boats name?

My boat's name was inspired by the family name of the PO. So I had to change it. Its now Tuturuga. A word that I remember from my time in Papua New Guinea. That was some 50 years ago and this is my first cruiser. The advantage is that there are no other with that name if I look it up on the Marine Traffic AIS website.

Re: What's your boats name?

My boat is named "Ahneema". Unusual but with plenty of meaning! After my daughter was born, we were teaching her to say "Thank You" and all she could muster up from day 1 to 10 months was Ahneema! That was her thank you! So I always remembered that so when I but my boat (5-years this Super Bowl weekend) I called her "Ahneema". I have been grateful for 27 years to God giving us such a wonderful daughter! So thank you or "Ahneema"

Re: What's your boats name?

My Dufour still has its previous name Pia but when the current registration expires I'll change it to Ubuntu. I was in doubt before between Ubuntu or Granma but the former won. (don't want to be boarded by the USCG using that Cuban name)

Re: What's your boats name?

My Dad's gaff rigged schooner I learned to sail on was the Blythe Spirit. I renamed my Seawind 1000 Blythe Spirit as well. My dad always claimed the name came from the first line of Percy Shelly's poem "To A Skylark":

Hail to thee, blithe Spirit! Bird thou never wert,
That from Heaven, or near it,
Pourest thy full heart
In profuse strains of unpremeditated art.

But my Mother always claimed the name originated from Noel Coward's favorite Broadway show of the same name. The story of a man who's wife died and when he remarried the ghost of his first wife haunted him.

The Sea Gods do not like to be confused.
Don't forget the proper re-naming ceremony.

Re: What's your boats name?

Our boat's name is "Godzilla", a big monster from the sea. She's a Wharram Pahi 42 catamaran, the only one this end of the Baltic (as far as I know) and most people who see her think "WT# is that?!" as the other boaters here are a pretty conservative bunch on the whole. So the name's appropriate! ;-)
