Re: What's your boats name?

Our boat came with name "Lunkentus" which as far as I understand is related to old Scandinavian tale where the troll or giant named Lunkentus saves three princesses from some kind of danger. My wife don't like this name and in Greece we did see on a wall of hotel an life-ring having boat name "Saronis" on it. We stayed there for quite long and when leaving lady running this hotel gave us small souvenir boat having name Saronis on it.

Would it be stupid idea to our boats name change name to "Saronis"?
Does anyone know does word saronis have some meaning or story behind it?

"Red C&C 25"
Good enough, I don't name inanimate objects. If I absolutely have to they get a name like that. Seriously thought about my registration number as a name, already on the boat by law!

Re: What's your boats name?

Our boat is called "On y va" which is a french expression for "letīs go!" (see more explaination below). I am dutch, live in Spain, so no connection with France as such. But the reason my family chose this name for me (actually) is that I always say "on y va" when we are about to leave a place, restaurants or whatever or are about to leave the house to go somewhere. It is one of the few things that have stuck in my mind from 3 years of french lessons torture at school.

So my kids and wife thought that, together with the meaning of letīs go, would be a good name for our boat, as we mainly bought it with longer voyages in mind.

For the purists:

"On y va"

Pronunciation:
[o(n) nee va]

Meaning:
wanna go?, let's go

Literal translation:
we're going (there)

Register:
informal

Notes:
The French expression on y va is a quick and easy way to:
- suggest an outing
- ask if others are ready to go
- announce that it's time to leave
- indicate the beginning of some activity

It's a rare C&C that one would consider inanimate. I find them quite lively!

Re: What's your boats name?

Our new to us Bristol 29.9 was named "Joyous" by the PO. We are renaming her "Pegu Club"
Named after a English officers / gentleman's club in Burma during WWI, also the name of a Bar on Houston Street in NYC. We went there before we owned our first boat and thought Pegu Club would be a good name for a future boat, it as well is the name of one of our favorite cocktails.

Re: What's your boats name?

We wanted a name that had never been registered with the USCG before, or any of the other registries I could research. Wasn't easy, keeping in mind we wanted something with some angles to it, never before used, and that could be understood on a radio.

We went with S/V Twisted Sheets.

Re: What's your boats name?

This has been a fun read. So many interesting boat names. Our boat was previously named Safannah.
We renamed her Janie Jones after a song by the Clash, and we just find it to be a good and salty name that fits the classic style of our boat. Click image for larger version

Re: What's your boats name?

We do a lot of day sailing.
I suggested what I thought would be a great name, but the wife nixed it.

"What? It's just the name of a song !"

Nope, no way.

The proposed name?

Afternoon Delight

Re: What's your boats name?

Janie Jones is a great song, great name.

So like others, I have an inherited boat name and am thinking about a rename. One option - being from Brooklyn, NY - is Cyclone, after the Coney Island roller coaster. Am I tempting fate?

That'll be fun on the VHF.. phonetically..

Thumbs up What's your boats name?

Our boat came with the name "Pure Pleasure". And it has been just that!

Re: What's your boats name?

KOINONIA - according to Koinonia | Definition of Koinonia by Merriam-Webster, the boat is well named: "...intimate spiritual communion and participative sharing in a common religious commitment and spiritual community..." When we had purchased her, she was in a boatyard about 400 kms away. It was April and we did not want to wait for summer weather to sail her home. We had contacted a respected boat mover, who in the 3 weeks before our closing date, had trailer trouble, took the transmission out of his truck and was trying to catch up with commitments to move boats all over the country. All this time my wife and i were seriously discussing changing the name as it is a mouthful especially on vhf. Finally, after hearing the last delay about 4 days before closing (and the seller was getting nervous of the delays) we made the promise to Neptune or one of the Gods of the sea that if we could just get the boat home we would keep the name. Next day, all falls into place, 2 days later boat is home at our yacht club, no damage, no issues. First summer, we have a berth at the bottom of the ramp leading to the entire marina. I think we met every member of the club that summer (we joke and say we were the Walmart greeters that summer), had so much help, advice and really enjoyed the boat and life. Sometimes the name is just meant to stay, we know she will always be Koinonia to us.

Re: What's your boats name?

Our boat is the, "Valentine," so named because some years ago I created a charity art show named, "Arts de Valentine," and that's where I first asked my wife if I could call her.

I'm not a pessimist, but when I see wacky or double entendre boat names, I think about how it would sound if they had to make a May Day call. As I recall, "Monkey Business," did not work out too well for Gary Hart.

Fair winds,

Leo
