The Fort Lauderdale Show is pretty much a power show not sail.

The October Annapolis Sailboat Show is probably a better bet but that is shrinking.

How big is the Lauderdale show compared to the Miami show?

Re: What happens to all the wannabees?

Lauderdale is all in one place and stretches from Bahia Mar out to Las Olas. It doesn't feature sail.

Miami is in Feb and has 4 different spread out venues for the three shows happening at the same time. One of those is Strictly Sail. I haven't been but I read that it doesn't have the choices that Annapolis has.

Others will chime in.

Re: What happens to all the wannabees?

Well dont I feel foolish... I am sure I had read in several places that Ft Lauderdale was more sailing oriented than Miami... sheesh.
The show itself was really just a way to have a firm date in place, and the timing works well for buy/fitout/etc prior to heading down the coconut milk run Feb/March.
We have also planned on basing ourselves in Florida while we find the boat to buy... ie. almost everything we will look at is in in Florida or Caribbean.

I've been toying with a trip to MD anyway, and surely Annapolis is the biggest of them all? For some reason I had thought the timing didn't work, but maybe thats cause I missed it last year.

For anyone who cares - Annapolis is October 10, FT Lauderdale is Oct-30.

Annapolis normally doesn't have used boats, just new.

Re: What happens to all the wannabees?

Yeah, I couldn't t imagine buying a boat at a boat show anyway. We will, more than likely, be buying ex-charter. The boat show for us is largely about seeing, feeling, networking, and learning about all the bits that we'l be spending money on after the initial purchase.

Re: What happens to all the wannabees?

For those wannabees looking for a deal. A Kenner Privateer 35 Ketch that I saw in Delcombre, Louisiana a few weeks ago is being auctioned off on Ebay. It is up to a little over a grand and has 7 days left. It could be a good deal. Looked nice from the outside.

Not a tall mans boat but has some nice lines.

Opposite ends of the spectrum for sure and there are a lot of choices in between for the money...good luck.

Well I'm a sailboat owner now. Still a wannabe of course but you have to crawl first.

Re: What happens to all the wannabees?

I think stupid questions do exist, and we need a forum for them.

You wouldn't have to call it the stupid questions forum, you could disguise it as "blue water cruiser recommendations for the non-sailor" forum, or something else clever.

Re: What happens to all the wannabees?

Wife said no to a boat so we ended up losing everything in a flood. In a country where there is no insurance for floods. 3 years later now ex wife. This past year I spent it taking care of my mother for 11 months. No belp from dad financially unless you count the 44 dollars he left for food snd the expired medications. He just wanted to put her in a nursing home. Ill just say he is filthy rich. So I spent my money taking care of her for a year before she died. So after everything im saving again for my dream. I say if your shio doesn't come in. Swim out to it.. well im still swimming.

Re: What happens to all the wannabees?

Its not that I have never lived on a boat. I did for 3 years the short list is down the east. Coast. The ICW. the Mississippi from start to finish. Florida. Bahamas. Mexico Panama California. Thousand islands. Plus boating on Lake Tahoe. Lake Michigan the Finger lakes and other places.

There is nothing like it.. great people and lots of fun. Even the force 9 storm with confused waves was exhilarating.
