Re: USS Constitution underway - 4 July 2011

I got between the USS Constitution an the USS Eagle during the Boston Tall Ships in 1991, or was it 1992? When a Salute was fired and wadding landed on the SeaRay I was steering.

As a Brit can I claim the last to be fired on during the War of Independence?

As a footnote I did a little shipwright work on the USS Constitution a year or so earlier.

I have a long connection with the Constitution as well. In July of 1997 with Commander Michael Beck, “Sixty Fourth in Command” of the USS Constitution, I sailed aboard from Marblehead to Boston -now that was pretty cool! USS Constitution - Nor'westerners Under Sail

Maybe you can! Back in the early 70s as a very young lad, my Dad took me to see HMS Victory in Portsmouth, I tripped over the plague that marked where Nelson was shot, I cut my Knee right next to where the great man fell......kindda made me feel a bit special and important in school the next day , actually, I dont think you are allowed on board anymore unless I am mistaken, so I may well have been the last to ¨fall¨where Nelson fell!

War of 1812 was a draw. Canada did not become part of the US, and the British stopped its efforts to thwart/limit US's western expansion and US maritime trade. Both countries ended up deeper in debt.

Madison's War, you mean. Seem to remember a little embarassment with the burning of the White House. We had a few victories, also a defeat or two, in single ship encounters among Frigates and Jackson's victory after the war was over. Other than that, it was an unnecessary war that did nothing but add to the national debt.

LOL, do you realize that if anyone ever tries to do a DNA test on the deck, your DNA might show up instead of Lord Nelson thus proving someone else fell there on not him:
I lived in Portsmouth for all my childhood and I have been aboard HMS Victory a number or times...

Barry Byng
( Probably related to the Admiral Byng who was the last senior officer shot after a court martial)

Never thought of that, they may need to replace Nelson´s Column at trafalgar square with one of Pablo the Sailor instead!

Re: USS Constitution Underway - 4 July 2011

While I was on the stern of PEREGRINA, taking pictures friend Ellen who lives aboard the 33 foot steel sailboat Rubicon, with John and their two duaghters, was aboard the USS Constitution for the 4th of July Cruise. I was a bit jealous and remembered how I felt when sailing aboard the Constitution sailing back in 1996. Here is Ellen's account of her time aboard, and check their blog for some cool photos aboard - Old Ironsides
