Dunno... for some reason, I clicked on a YouTube video of "abandoned sailboat found drifting," and then YouTube kept serving up video after video of more abandoned sailboats found drifting. The odds of interception may be small... or there are lots of them?

Re: Urgent help needed to recover abandoned yacht NW Barbados

On another thread folks believed the odds were between 0.1 and 10% of an ocean voyage ending in disaster.

Each year it seems a couple of boats from the ARC are abandoned and that is just one rally.

Re: Urgent help needed to recover abandoned yacht NW Barbados

The problem, amongst others, is defining "an ocean voyage." There was a rally here last week and one boat sunk enroute on a 35 mile trip. But Slocum went around the world alone successfully. Both were ocean voyages, drastically different in scope and difficulty, and different in outcome.

I see no way to make any equivalence between these two experiences.

What would be a wonderful resource would be a collection of sinking or near sinking stories. After action reports. Something that explained what the failure mechanizing was. Or perhaps more broadly, a list of voyages that besides vessel loss included crew death or significant injury.

For example does it make more sense to spend your money on a liferaft or an automatic defibulator?

A good start but of limited scope.

Thanks for the link.

Re: Urgent help needed to recover abandoned yacht NW Barbados

Unbelievable!

I was the owner of a sailboat Hanse 50 feet, lost in the same area, but a little bit further (800 NM from Barbados), for similar reasons (rudder), just 2 days before on Dec 19th 2016.

The coast giards sent to the crew a super tanker which accosted to the sailboat. The 4 members of the crew were safe, but the sailboat sustained substantial damages, the mast has fallen.

We never heard about the boat anymore (less of 2 years of age).
Now we try to fight against the insurance, and the lawyers are exchanging confidential letters to find a deal, that means that the insurance should pay, but just accepts to pay half of the price (or something like that).

Technical reasons : the part which clamps the axis of the rudder with the sector is tighten with 4 socket-head grubscrews, and it's just NOT STRONG ENOUGH, all being in Alu ... All got torn away.

Re: Urgent help needed to recover abandoned yacht NW Barbados

If anyone wants to see the video of the rescue it is on youtube. type "rescue at sea-mid atlantic mayday" in the search bar on youtube.

The video was taken by the boat that rescued them.

I saw that video a couple days ago. I was reading this story and thought "This sure sounds just like the Youtube video I watched".
