Twenty Million Tons of Tsunami Debris Floating Towards Hawaii

I'm curious if anyone in the cruising community has heard of floating debris from the tsunami?

"A Russian ship’s crew spotted the debris - which included a 20ft long fishing boat - last month after passing the Midway Islands."

When I was in Suvarov there was a lot of debris on the beach from Japanese fishing boats, but I always assumed that they were lost in the South Pacific somewhere-- not debris from the North Pacific that had somehow crossed the equator. But now I wonder-- do floating things tend to cross the equator?

This is related but probably not exactly the information you were looking for. I don't believe any of these garbage patches crosses the equator.

Perhaps this will help the world finally be aware that what is dumped in the water/oceans doesn't really magically go away (ie out of sight out of mind).

The debri field will hit the US west coast in 2013 and the big pieces is rumored to be controlled by the US CG to try and keep it out of the shipping lanes. I'm guessing target practice for the CG.

The Japanese have some spare factory ships thanks to Sea Shepherd.
Why dont they go out there and get their material back.
