The time has finally come - so long for now
Twenty years of dreaming, two years of serious planning, and now 6 days until I leave from St. Maarten to head for the Mediterranean. I know many of you can relate to the surreal feeling you experience when your so close to starting your dream.
I'd like to thank all the members who have provided so much valuable knowledge over the years. It has really helped me prepare Palarran for this adventure. Especially helpful was all the information about cruising the Balearic's, Costa Smeralda, and Greece.
Good luck to you all and have a nice sailing summer.
David

Bob voyage, David. May you have fair winds, clear skies, and calm seas.

Have a safe ride. If you intend to come north and stop in here (Bermuda) give me a shout and I'll buy the first round.

Re: The time has finally come - so long for now
have a good trip!
learn to sleep on passage, beware of post departure depression,
its all a bit of an anti-climax once you get going, and the next stop is days/weeks away.
it all gets better after the first 3 days.
get a routine going asap on passage as it helps pass the time,
dinner is the high spot of the day!
if you get a chance visit as many islands in the azores as possable ,you will regret not doing so unless you regularly do transat's.
stock up on duty frees in sxm you wont' find cheaper!

Have fun!
Dunno how much time you have spent in Europe before - but the place has more history than you can shake a stick at. Admittedly a lot of it is wrapped around several millenia of killing / invading each other or other non PC activities, but fascinating nonetheless.....really gives an insight as to where "we" came from (as Westerners). And a lot of that stuff is marked by dirty great big buildings and monuments dating back more than a couple of hundred years (aka "the new stuff"!).

Re: The time has finally come - so long for now
Thanks for the encouragement.
I'm sitting in Peters Sport Cafe right now having a great tasting beer. It was a wild ride getting here. We where actually fairly lucky to be alive. The carnage that has been arriving hourly is a testiment that you really can't be too prepared. I have heard that one catamaran was lost two days ago but don't know for sure. If anyone has info and could pass it on I'd appreciate it.
It took 17 days in total. It took 7 to go the last 450 miles.
I honestly hope to God that I never see that #$% again.

Ahhh, the first ass kicking. It's all down hill from here , you made it, your boat made it, good shake down.
Godspeed to your great adventure.

PS
Hope that other vessel turns out to be ok.
