Tanker Barge aground in BC

This really is criminal.

A simple change of law making the CEOs of these corporations criminally responsible for these situations might solve the huge problem, worldwide.

In this situation, they must abide by the "no tanker rule" and run outside. Pilots on board until they reach outside waters.

The "tanker" was empty and isn't what it leaking, Spill would be the same if the cargo was tennis shoes or Baby food

This had nothing to do with the barge being a tanker, it was empty. If it had been an empty lumber barge, the tug would have still run aground. I would think the channel would be well charted, something must have gone wrong, maybe a strong cross wind?

The fact that it went aground is warning enough, IMHO. Why issue an exemption to the law so that a tanker barge of this size can run the inside passage? I understand that fuel needs to be taken into the communities along the IP but that shouldn't mean that large tanker barges are allowed to run the IP.

Theres plenty of room past Bella Bella for any size ship. Most likely mechanical failure at fault. A few thousand gallons of diesel won't ruin the area...Bella Bella dumps their raw sewage straight into the ocean so if their clam beds survive that I'm sure all will be OK.

I agree with you Bill, it's the tug that is causing the damage.

If it ran aground then it can't that deep and possibly there can be a way of plugging the leak.

Well the response organization have dispatched skimmers to the region and deployed a boom so I am assuming they are expecting to recover something.

it is negligent for sure. We are having very stormy conditions, and they chose to go.

Agreed! And it makes a mockery of the outrage and large fines sometimes associated with spills far smaller than 500 gallons... you know, the 'any visible sheen" kinda rule.
