Pirate Films:

My favorite pirate film is "Treasure Island" (1934 version). Since I was a young boy I was hooked on that film. Great story. Great characters. I enjoy both the Wallace Beery and Robert Newton acting as Long John Silver.

Here is a list to get us started:

Treasure Island (1934, 1950, 1990)

Pirates of the Caribbean (#1 in the series)

A pirate walks into a pirate bar with a steering wheel sticking out of his pants.
Bartender says "ahoy matey, is that a steering wheel sticking out of yer pants?"
Pirate says "Arrr, and it's drivin' me nuts!"

My favorite pirate quote:

"Send me ten million dollars or I will start cutting fingers off your grandchildren, who are being held in vile conditions in Somalia".

Why are you glamorizing thugs and killers?? For those of us who actually sail into areas where these bastards are active, it doesn't seem amusing.

I wholeheartedly agree. Vile and dissolute creatures, the lot of them. I intend to see that any man who sails under a pirate flag or wears a pirate brand gets what he deserves: a short drop and a sudden stop.

Well, I thought it was obvious that Talk Like a Pirate Day is intended to be fun, and does not profess to be a serious declaration by anyone that "we want to be a pirate like those who exist today in reality."

Put simply: because it is humorous, silly, and fun.

It takes a sense of humor, so it may not be enjoyed by some.

And, because pirates have long had a place in the lore of the sea.

Up above I posted some photos and artwork (movie posters) from one of the classic pirate stories (a novel) and Hollywood movies, "Treasure Island." That one film made a strong impression on me when I was a young boy. It along with others like "Captain Blood" (Errol Flynn movie) and others captured my imagination about sailing the seas.

Even in those movies, there was a dramatic conflict between "good and evil" men and it was shown (in Treasure Island) that while some things about a particular pirate (Long John Silver) could be likable, overall the pirates were cutthroat killers who could not be trusted.

Some of us can see the use of fiction to tell us things about the world, and I see that as one of the core values of literature. How? It tells us something about people or ourselves. Of course in addition, it can be entertaining and fun and stir the imagination.

_______________________

Here is a clip from the International Talk Like a Pirate Day website that explains the phenomena that was started by a couple of guys and adopted by millions of people around the world.
"Why do we need an International Talk Like a Pirate Day?

Make no mistake. We do. But it's a little hard to articulate why, especially when you've made the mistake of referring to your wife as a scurvy bilge rat and tried to order her back into the galley.

Talking like a pirate is fun. It's really that simple.

It gives your conversation a swagger, an elán, denied to landlocked lubbers. The best explanation came from a guy at a Cleveland radio station who interviewed us on the 2002 Talk Like a Pirate Day. He told us we were going to be buried by people asking for interviews because it was a "whimsical alternative" to all the serious things that were making the news so depressing.

In other words, silliness is the holiday's best selling point.

Before we go any further, there's something we need to be clear about. Pirates were and are bad people. Really reprehensible. Even the most casual exploration of the history of pirates (and believe us, casual is an accurate description of our research) leaves you hip deep in blood and barbarity. We recognize this, all right? We aren't for one minute suggesting that real, honest-to-God pirates were in any way, shape or form worth emulating.

So what is it exactly that we're celebrating here, if not pirates? What, you're wondering, is the point?

We're going to be painfully honest here, perhaps fatally so.

The point is, there is no point.

And that's what's fun about Talk Like a Pirate Day specifically, and talking like a pirate in general."
Hope that helps!

Today is "Talk Like a Pirate Day."

Not to be mistaken for "Talk Like a Curmudgeon Day."

Back on topic...

Here are the founders of this day, which started about 20 years ago as a hoot (fun) thing to do. Rick Lindenmuth, Willie Sayles, Elijah Raynor started the celebration (they call it a holiday).

And they have a fun video "How to Talk Like a Pirate" video on Youtube too.

Steady, I probably meet most of the functional definitions of curmudgeon, so you may have a point there. But, this curmudgeon had a cruising friend hacked to death with a machete on the deck of his own boat, a boat where we had spent some happy hours in previous days. This tends to sour one's opinion of glorifying even fictional pirates. I suspect that Malcolm's widow feels the same way.

Understood.

That is a tragic end of any friend or person.

With respect...

The theme of this thread is the humorous celebration of a day declared a "holiday" during which ordinary folks talk like a pirate. It is not an endorsement of serious piracy or violence.

Many things in life can be difficult, or tragic.

A bit of humor can make even the worst of times bearable, if one retains the ability to laugh despite the pain, , drudgery, boredom, discomfort, or difficulties.

Talk Like a Pirate Day is all about humor.

Re: Talk Like a Pirate Day! Arrrrggh!

Here is a pirate film, starring Robert Newton (my favorite Long John Silver) reprising his role as LJS. In this, a sequel film, he goes to the rescue of his former shipmate Jim.

Long John Silver's Return to Treasure Island
(1954) ROBERT NEWTON

Re: Talk Like a Pirate Day! Arrrrggh!

When I heard Charlton Heston was going to do Long John Silver in his son's movie I thought it would be a mistake. But for me now he IS Long John! He brought just the right amount of menace to the part. The only video link I can find here is just the trailer. Wish I could have found the "apple barrel" conversation or something as dramatic.

Its Halloween, a little boy dressed as a Pirate knocks on a neighbors door, the neighbor, appreciating the costume asks " wheres your Bucaneers? " the little boy replies, "under me Buckin Hat"
