Sydney, Working on the Boat

After some years out of the yachting scene I am returning and intend to base a boat in Sydney. Since my old cruising days the ability to work on
ones own boat seems very much more restricted, every official with a regulation book making things more difficult.

Is there a list out there of yards that allow owners to work on their own yachts, or if not a list a few names where this might still be possible. I noted more that one Sydney yard that refuses all but their own contractors and has a minimum charge out rate on skilled work of $99 per hour.........

Any ideas would be most appreciated

There are still a few yards in Sydney where you can work on your boat but, having done more boat work than is "normal" I gotta ask why? Still gonna be expensive.

There are some nice looking older (1980's) boats 30 to 35' on Yachthub. They're still going to need work but most could be done on a mooring. Keep the yard work to a minimum. Just don't buy anything that needs lots of out of water work.

Many thanks for the advice. Sadly I started renovating and building boats back in 1973, its now a bit late to kick the habit

Gord, many thanks for the kind welcome. I've been out for a while. I did the first boat renovation in the UK in 1973 then on via several others in the Med
and WI to a new build in cold molded in NZ. For the last 20 years we have
been building and operating small wineries in Australia. As the wine biz in Oz is no place now for small artisan wineries it seemed like a good time to return to boats. I must say things have changed a little, bureaucrats and the lunge for profit seem to rule.

I sincerely hope when we know the scene a little better a friendlier view will
be apparent
