Swing mooring and anchor

We call a buoy attached to a rode and concrete block a swing mooring. In poor weather setting an anchor as well as attaching to the swing mooring settles the mind a little more! As the wind might/will likely change setting the anchor correctly is important. Has anyone a good method that works well?

A properly built swing mooring apparatus doesn't need an additional anchor.
In changing winds or tide an anchor will only complicate things.

Re: Swing mooring and anchor

Greetings and welcome aboard the CF, Garthh.
A "swing mooring" is, by definition, a single point attachment, to the bottom.

Re: Swing mooring and anchor

Deploying an anchor while on a mooring seems like a receipt for disaster. I would only consider deploying an anchor while attached to a mooring if I thought the mooring was inadequate for my boat and conditions. Of course, if I thought this, I wouldn’t be on that mooring.

I suppose I could conceive of a scenario that would force me to be on a poor mooring, but then we’re into dealing with bad situations. At which point I’d do whatever I needed to do. To deploy an anchor I probably launch it from my dinghy. Or if I could manage it, I’d set the anchor first and arrange it so I could back down and then pick up the mooring.

But seriously, none of these options are good. Much better to be swinging from your own good anchor and rode (assuming you have good anchor and rode) than playing with what you suggest.

Re: Swing mooring and anchor

Thank you all and I agree entirely.
I knew a very experienced skipper, since passed, who swore by laying an anchor while on a swing mooring he was unsure about - in other words one he probably shouldn't have been using anyway! The question was just a thought, someone may have had a method that I hadn't thought of.

Re: Swing mooring and anchor

quiet night, woken up 2am-ish by something, up on deck, to find I'm drifting slowly towards the next boat in the mooring field...I probably shouldnt have tied up to a mooring ball with a pretty good beard hanging off it, but no harm done in a dead calm.
On my own swing mooring I do regular inspections and replace the rope at no more than 2 year intervals - ( actually I dont replace it, I add a new rope and keep the old one, marking it for removal at the next cycle).
A well laid, properly maintained swing mooring is more than adequate to hold the vessel its designed for in any conditions in its area.
