Best not to confuse alternative forms of medical treatment with food supplements.

I'd place accupuncture therapy and chiropractic medicine right in there close with the supplements having personally given both a try. Most people are easily fooled, some eventually figure it out, some sooner than others.

Well I guess 1.4 billion Chinese people are wrong then...

I also need to re evaluate the thousands of adjustment procedures I have made that negated the need for surgery on people with back problems.... silly me.. weavis M.D., D.O.

So glad you sorted this out for us.

I saw an operation in China removing an ovarian cyst. No anesthetic. Complete entry using a surgical scalpel. The patient was awake and alert on the operating table as the scalpel cut into her skin. Even as the Doctor reached in and located the cyst on her overie. Again zero anaesthetic. The whole operation was done using acupuncture.

But of course it's all nonsense.

Re: Supplements, health foods and exercise strategies for cruisers

As in any treatment protocol, there are good therapists and bad ones. I am disappointed that some schools of chiropractors concentrate on money making and standardised procedures rather than individual patient care.

I went the Osteopathic route to increase my knowledge and abilities as a physician. Rather than put a patient on pain relief medication for life, I found that rectification of misaligned skeletal issues could often fix a whole heap of problems from respiration difficulties, headaches, walking issues etc.

I am of the observed opinion that it is needed when needed and is PART of a health treatment but not the answer to everything. There is a need for balanced individual treatment for each patient.

Here is a technique employed by me that is used in emergency wards in Australia, and came from Osteopathic/acupuncture techniques... Used for dislocations. I have been using something similar for 25 years. Its all about knowing how muscles work and how to relax them.

Yes, and I watched David Blaine hold his breath for 17 minutes, it was awesome.

Like I stated, some figure out the illusion quicker than others.

Not Chinese illusion at all. You should read the academic research literature.

Acupuncture anesthesia for open heart surgery in contemporary China.

Author information
Abstract

BACKGROUND:
Although the use of acupuncture anesthesia for open heart surgery, which was introduced in China four decades ago, has declined in recent years, there is a renewed interest in it in contemporary China due to the escalating medical costs associated with open heart surgery. This study was aimed to determine whether a combined acupuncture-medicine anesthesia (CAMA) strategy reduces early postoperative morbidity and medical costs in patients undergoing open heart operation under cardiopulmonary bypass.
METHODS:
From July 2006 to October 2010, CAMA was applied in 100 patients undergoing open heart surgery in comparison with another 100 patients under the conventional general anesthesia (GA). For all the CAMA patients, an abdominal breathing training program was practiced for the 3 consecutive days prior to operation. About 15 to 20 min prior to surgical incision, acupuncture needles were inserted into the bilateral points ZhongFu, LieQue, and XiMen. During operation, patients were kept on spontaneous breathing. Endotracheal intubation was not employed but only prepared as a standby. The narcotic drugs, fentanyl and midazolam, were intravenously injected but in very low doses as compared to GA. Open heart procedures were performed routinely in both groups.

Abstract
The paper reports 174 cases of brain operations in temporo-fronto-occipital region by using the regime of combined acupuncture and medication. The patients comprised of 122 males and 52 females. The acupoints consisted of ear needling and body needling. Adjuvant drugs used were half-dosage Innovar and 0.1% lidocaine for scalp infiltration. According to the documented two-grade scaling criteria, 97.1% patients belonged to grade I. No obvious discrepancy existed between ear needling group and body needling one. Three controlled groups are presented for comparison: 1) 0.1% lidocaine alone; 2) acupuncture plus normal saline; 3) acupuncture plus 0.1% lidocaine. The resultant P value was less than 0.005, with remarkable statistical significance. It is revealed that 0.1% lidocaine per se cannot achieve satisfactory analgesia, whereas the efficacy of acupuncture can be greatly enhanced by the combination of 0.1% lidocaine and acupuncture. This method is proved as an effectual means to offset the incomplete analgesia of acupuncture, especially for those requiring intraoperative demonstration of surgical effects, to avoid impairment to functional areas of cerebral cortex, which are undoubtedly superior to general anesthesia.

Re: Supplements, health foods and exercise strategies for cruisers

Going walking,

Many brain surgeries are performed without anesthetic or anesthesia throughout the world. It's possible to do this because we humans don't have pain receptors (pain nerves) inside our brains. The surgeons can poke around all they want in there.... no pain. Many times they need the patient awake in order to locate the problem area, by asking the patient questions or asking them to move extremities.

Acupuncture has nothing to do with brain surgery. How do I know this? I'm a registered Nurse, my brother works in neurosurgery at USC Medical Center and my wife has worked in surgery for 38 years.

I didn't google up my facts on the internet, sleep at a Holiday Inn Express or watch a youtube video.

Best not to confuse 'alternative' with 'medical', IMHO.

Well, put me in the statistical database. I am a vey happy patient of a chiropractor. My chronic back pain was cured by a back street doc when the top doc in my part of the U.K. couldn't fix me. A miracle cure in my view, so I am now a reformed sceptic.

I think conceptually you have a confusion. The aim is to cure the patient. Different countries treat ailments with different therapies and techniques. Strangely enough they work.

As a physician, I seek alternative avenues of treatment for my patients to prevent them becoming a statistic.

Medical Errors Are No. 3 Cause Of U.S Deaths, Researchers Say.

I dont reach for tree hugging therapies or spiritual changes. I reach for sound researched Scientifically validated therapeutics. The information given above is WHY I look for the patients wellbeing first. If I have to use cortisone, I will use it. If drugs have to prescribed for life threatening situations, they will be used.

I often get patients in the clinic on 10-25 medications a day. Usually we can reduce that by 2/3rds pretty quickly, and sometimes to 0 with a little work. Drugs are over prescribed and to be fair.. pretty dangerous. It works like this. A provider will give a drug for a condition, then a reaction to the drug will happen and so he gives another drug to counteract that problem... then a while later, a symptom complex builds up from the combinations and then other drugs are prescribed. Before you know the patient is on 10 drugs. The drug manual for each drug states: "..must NOT be withdrawn immediately! Only under the direction of a physician". Yet when the patient goes to a specialist, or the local hospital, they usually stop the drugs immediately and replace them, OR just add a bunch more to the list.

Example: 76 year old man was mildly forgetful. He went to his doctor and was prescribed 3 drugs. He became confused and fairly sick. Was at home and needed a caregiver for the last year. He came to us 10 weeks ago. We removed the drugs, monitored him every two days. He now has regained his original state of slightly forgetful but has no confusion and is enjoying the life of a 77 year old man who has earned the right to be slightly forgetful. The 'alternative' therapy we employed was to remove the drugs.

Weavis, I like your thinking. I'll bet you actually have real conversations with your patients too! That's a novel idea for many in the medical community. Many doctors lose their curiosity after their internship and adopt a patronizing attitude.

I would like to recommend Ultrasound and/or STENS as a physical therapy which helped my tendonitis dramatically within a few minutes, this caused from too much ambitious tree swinging recently. I suggest highly you seek a Physical Therapist as an option instead of a Chiro, not just for the suggested therapies but also for exercises and stretches.

My clinic utilises infrasound, ultrasound and various other devices. These are considered 'alternative' treatments by a lot of medics. We also use medicur which does low emission magnetic at 6hz... fixes a frozen shoulder in no time flat. Designed by NASA to combat muscle weakness in space flights.

All alternatives to surgeries and stuff.
