Re: Super Size Me

Well, after doing some estimates, a one week charter is going to run us about $4k if we go with another couple, or $5.5K if we go it alone. Yikes. I'm not saying no by any means, but this is why we haven't done this yet. I've emailed my sailing buddy to see what he thinks.

But I'm going to put another iron in the fire. I started a thread.

Re: Super Size Me

If you want to go to the BVIs, it will cost $$. If you want to try a larger boat, have you considered a week on a "learning charter" out of a west coast FL charter company? Look around, the opportunities are out there. We charted a 32 Endeavor in the USVIs with a few years of C22 ownership. That was in 1986, been back with different companies five times since. Good luck.

That is not a bad option. I found this one for $1000 per week.

Re: Super Size Me

I know the title of this thread must amuse some of you. None of these sizes are exactly "super." But we are going larger and I liked the title "Super Size Me" more than "Moving on Up!"

I'm hoping this upgrade will be encouragement for both of us to upgrade to a larger boat. Or maybe we'll be happy to charter once a year. We'll see.
I'm betting ya'll will love it, and moving up to a 30-35 will the best fun you ever had...Don't need to break the bank either....
PS: Yeah, unless the wind picks up, we don't need to plug in the winch handle.
I got one of these too... Absolutely love it...

But now that you've mentioned "Movin' on Up" I fell obligated to provide a George Jefferson quote:

Re: Super Size Me

And this is gonna' sound really simplistic, but the biggest thing in shifting up boat sizes is that you have to think through all of your maneuvers further in advance. That, & when stepping up to a bigger boat, you can't just man handle all of the lines and systems. You have to use winches, & other forms of mechanical advantage.
Yeah, this is good advice. The big boat cant be stopped by jumping on the dock and manhandling it when you make an error docking etc. OTOH I think a big boat is more forgiving than small ones when the wind or seas pipe up.. many 23 footers you are rail down or knocked down pretty fast!
Make up a sailing resume', I think you will get a charter ok with that and 20 years experience.

That is true, and I think my wife will appreciate the improved stability. She's not comfortable with the sudden heeling our light boat does in a gusty wind.

I contacted BVI Yacht Charters and filled out their resume. Just got an email back that I am approved!

The idiots!

So I have some deciding to do.

Thanks, everyone, for your input and encouragement.

Re: Super Size Me

You might want to check out some other bases if the BVI's are more expensive. I checked two years ago and your prices seem pretty high....
34 foot Mono: 7 days: $2725 or $1362 per couple, or $195 per day per couple.
10 days: $3984

Oh yeah, I meant to elaborate on that. My cost included everything. Airfare, provisioning, meals out, you name it.

We promise not to call and tell them what a hack you are...

You might want to stay away from the "stupid things I've done" thread... :0) P

Hey, I appreciate that. And if you're in the BVI in January, and you see a boat sailing sideways, wave hello!
