No radar will pick up a stump or container, no AIS will pick up a fishing boat that doesn't have a transponder, etc. You're taking a risk and that's all there is to it. On a sailboat you have max 20 minutes to alter course if a ship is coming at you over the horizon. On a power vessel, less.

Suggest finding s friend to go with as should have person on watch at pretty much all time would be my suggestion.

That's what makes me smile when folk say they stay up all night and sleep during the day..
Stay awake dawn till dusk then at least 2/3rds of the day has an active visual watch.. then sleep when dark and you cannot see anything.

The Low Earth Orbit satellites that handle the AIS signals from large commercial vessels, fishing vessels, and pleasure vessels are 600 - 700 kilometres high above the earth's surface.

Sure, you're right 1. limited range, about 700 km vertically up, is needed; and 2. those satellites then download their data to earth stations. Without those earth stations, we'd not have the data.

Marinetraffic.com is just one of many aggregators of AIS data. What you see for free is just a subset of the data available. If you happen to be temporarily impecunious and are just browsing what marinetraffic.com offers for free, you'll likely note that vessels shown well outside of VHF signal range have a wee 'position received by satellite' note attached to their location icon.

The aggregators of AIS data make their profit selling their realtime and accumulated data. For example, US$750 or so will get you a monthly density map of most anywhere on the planet and in the resolution you desire. See for example: https://www.exactearth.com/products/...s#online-store

In coastal waters, particularly along the coasts of developed economies, shore stations aggregate the signals of vessels that only broadcast AIS by VHF.

The commercial aggregators, such as marinetraffic.com, exactAIS, fleetmon, and so on are happy to add the coastal AIS data to theirs for completeness, so to speak.
