We have about 500 boatcards in those card holder books that come from the dollar store. Many cards now show a picture of the boat on one side and a pic of the owners on the other. When we get a card we write the place and date on it. Makes it easier to remember where we met these folks.

We make our own on photo paper and stick it on card stock for stiffness.

May be a fad to you, Mauritz, but then, you are not really a cruiser, are you?

In our lives they play a useful role as others have reported here.

Oh, BTW, we've been using boat cards for almost 28 years now... a pretty long lived "fad", eh?

We just got a HAM QLS the other day from a guy up in the hill country of Texas,

they are still kicking around. My parents used boat cards on their circumnavigation, they went through a lot of em. I can't tell you how many times we wished we had boat cards of our own, just so much easier to exchange info.
I started to design one but not sure what all I want on them. This thread gives me some great ideas, thanks.

alchemy--i dont and wont use em as those with whom i am friends tend to remember me sans extra piece of `paper to lose...
i have a difficulty keeping cards straight and only use cards from certain souls and repair folks.
i dont know anyone who was looking for more, as many make their own on board.
but i dont get around and mix with those fancy folks much--i tend to stay with the low lifes....they are much more funner.

I make up my own on a cheap printer so the picture's not real good, and needs to be updated, but it still ID's the boat, us & logo. Eventually I'll go to a professional card in the near future (water resistant). Mine is a two sided card.

I think I have about 30 cards that have come and gone out in the past two years. It's a good way to keep in touch with people/friends, or boat business.

With a fading memory its best to have something written on a piece of paper and tucked somewhere out of the way. Can't think of a better way than on boat cards. Someday I'll get some.

Hi folks...Great posts. I just took the picture I use for my Avatar here and used a paint program on my CPU. I had to do the back shadow with a two tone because of the different colors and tones on the photo. It wasn't easy but it was fun. I would add the Turquoise first, then the white...then grab the corner of the window and move it around to create the effect. Then went to Staples and paid $26 for 500!
I'm seeing boat cards as a social tool...example: You meet someone in port for an hour or two, strike up a great conversation and find mutual interests. Then when you see them 4 months later, the chance of remembering their name has diminished greatly. So it's cool to say, "Hi Bob and Barbara". Also I have no doubt that I am making life long friends which is what it's all about for me. Also because my background is Engineering, there may even be good job contacts out there.
