Its to do with reference point and stereo vision.

First, put the camera on a tripod and sit it in the cockpit and you will see a view that is better, but unusable because the audience will put their heads on the side to try and level it. When you take the camera off the tripod you do the same, again stuffing the image.

secondly Stereo Vision is a lot more exact than one could normally believe. Our eyes are really a most magical pice of evolution that just cant be replicated with man made devices, let a lone a single lens device.
Go on deck and close one eye and the waves will look comepletely different.

Remember also that when you look 'up' at a big wave your own boat is probably going 'up' a wave so your stern is low and it appears you are looking at a much larger wave.

But if you cant video waves dont worry. Neither can Hollywood!

So just make other things the subject instead of the waves

I had read once it was due to the blues of the water not showing the depth of field, or something like that. Regardless, you have to have noticed when people upload utube videos of "sailing in storm conditions" it looks like a normal cruising day. Even mine, afterward, looks fairly benign.

Actually, I thought your video was pretty good. 1) it was interesting because it was real, 2) the wind sound wasn't too bad and we can hear your voice clearly, and 3) you shaved and had combed your hair...

Note the position in most of the shots of the life lines. they move up and down in the shot. A tripod will fix your frame. Try that and have the horizon in the center of frame and a fixed point on the boat in the bottom of frame. Have the tripod set as low as you can.

Remember that ALL camera work on TV and movies the camera is held by something. Either a tripod, a crane, stedicam or some tricky bit of kit. No one hand holds camers. Theres gotta be a reason for that! (Only news gathering is by hand held camera, and thats only in action reporting, the rest is on tripod)

Other sugestion is instead of one long shot edit together the 4 or five biggest waves and leave the small stuff out.

Having the crew comment why shooting would help, plus some conventions that work... like set up some bottles to slide in the galley, a crew member trying to grab some hold etc.

I dont really remember Perfectt Storm movie very well, but the computer egnerated waves looked sh!t, so to show the waves were big the kept deluging the cast in buckets of water. You could try that to the ponce in the helm seat!

I'm a little critical because I try to make my own videos but what I've realized is that similar to photography and writing, just because you have a good idea doesn't mean you're going to do a good job at capturing it or producing it. There are writers, there are actors, there are videographers, and there are producers. Sailors try to do all jobs with no real effort at understanding the process.

It's why most blogs are boring and pictures are bland: you actually need to be good at it.

It's one reason I take a lot of photos, make a lot of videos, and write a lot. If I keep it up, hopefully in fifteen years I won't suck as bad as I do today.

Sometimes the picture taking needs to not happen and we just remember and tell the story.
Yesterday I anchored/ hid from storms. A small Really well protected cove. Found ourselves amidst a large school of rays. No one got a camera all afternoon we enjoyed watching and no one filmed it. We were so enjoying the action we just forgot we needed to face share and film our amusement. It went on well into the night with rays bubbling up, wakes on the surface fins and thrashing sounds in the water.
I got out a high output light and lit up the water. For a short period. We saw snakes, rays and feeder fish. I don't need to film my every moment. We had a real treat having that many rays in the cove. Great memories.
