Sailing with a chicken

For a 28 day passage, much simpler to bring the eggs. They will keep that long even without refrigeration.

Consider the space, enclosures, shelter, water & food the hens will need. (1/4-1/3 pound per day per hen).

The dropping do stink, and even hens can be noisy.

Besides, if the get seasick, they may decline to lay eggs anyway.

Eggs are pretty amazing. They will last for weeks at room temp, months if you can get your hands on "farm fresh" eggs which have not been washed. Washing eggs removes the natural preservative from the shell.

If you're ever in doubt about an egg, submerge it in fresh water. If it floats, don't even think about trying to eat it. Save it for throwing at the guy who anchors on top of you.

I may be a newbie to boat ownership, but I have a few years experience with chickens and eggs.

BTW, the eggs you get at the local supermarket could be months old already. Since they've been washed, they must be refrigerated.

In one of Guirec's early videos, he is provisioning the boat for transatlantic and doesn't have enough money to pay for all the eggs. He shows the shopkeeper how much money he has, and the shopkeeper hands him the chicken.

Many years ago I was in Hong Kong and saw quite a few junks crossing back and forth to Kowloon that had chickens, in pens hanging off the stern where droppings were released to the sea, or channel really. Not quite what you'd call "free range." I figured that would be the only way I'd keep a bird on a boat. Once you see how much of a mess a bird can make you realize that pirates probably didn't have too many parrots... or they just had really big ships...

Don't laugh, it's quite realistic since Hollande (The previous president) awarded it to Prince Mohammed bin Naif of Saoudi Arabia, only two months after the same Hollande blamed the mass execution of 47 people in Saudi Arabia... I guess Hollande was acting as the courier for Dassault Aviation who've trying to sell their Rafale to the world with little success !
