Re: SAILING QUESTIONNAIRE (PLEASE RESPOND!)

There are some projects that would be well served by multiple choice questions like these, but if you are planning to learn anything about choosing the right conditions for sailing, this is not the best way to learn. There are excellent books, there are lots of sailors who love talking about what they do, and there are even courses you can take with an instructor/captain who will help you learn all the things your questions merely touch. A multiple choice survey is a severely defective way to learn about sailing and weather.
Oh, and I hate to mention this, but -- there is no way to predict what you will experience on the water. You can prepare all you want, but nothing can prevent surprises. If you want to sail, you must be willing and even happy to face the unexpected. Some of our most precious memories are about overcoming, or just surviving, the unexpected challenges.

Re: SAILING QUESTIONNAIRE (PLEASE RESPOND!)

App developer does not use app to perform survey. Strange.

Re: SAILING QUESTIONNAIRE (PLEASE RESPOND!)

Good luck with your project. As others have said, it would help if I knew something about what you are looking for.

1. How often do you check the weather?

Several times a day

2. How far in advance do you check the weather before sailing?
A few hours before
An hour before
A day before
A week before
XXX ALL OF THE ABOVE

3. What is your preferred weather condition for sailing?

Clear, with good visibility, and breezy. Now ask me how often I actually get my preferred conditions when I am sailing!!
PS: there would be little point in trying to sail if I knew there would be no wind.

4. What is your least preferred weather condition for sailing?

Gale (strong wind speeds from 39 to 54 miles per hour)
Dense fog (visibility is less than one-quarter of a mile)
Hail
Snowfall
Thunderstorm (lightning and thunder, usually accompanied by strong winds, heavy rainfall and sometimes hail).

5. What is your preferred wind speed for sailing?

16 – 19 miles per hour

6. What is your least preferred wind speed for sailing?

No wind or 25 or more miles per hour

7. What is your preferred temperature for sailing?

26 – 30˚C

8. What is your least preferred temperature for sailing?

0 – 10˚C

9. Does the weather affect your decision on what equipment to bring?
No

10. What equipment is important to bring regardless of the weather?
Headlamp
Goggles
Binoculars
Sunglasses
Life Jacket
Handheld GPS
Personal Locating Beacon
Smartphone
Sun hat
Camera
Personal duffle bag
Signal flares
First aid kit
Other (please specify)
Food
Water (drinking)
Sun screen
Jacket/sweatshirt

Very little of this appears to relate to a weather app. When I check the weather I want to know what the overall weather prediction is for the time I expect to be sailing and for several hours after I expect to be back in port, since the absolute timeframe for any single sail varies considerably. I also want to know wind direction and speed, and whether those are likely to change within my timeframe.

Re: SAILING QUESTIONNAIRE (PLEASE RESPOND!)

Not sure about the rest of the group, but my head is spinning, trying to "Select only one" from any or all of the answer choices. But any response at all, I would expect, would merit a measured amount of respect for this young man, as he at least is trying to gain life-skills, rather that hold up a convenience store.

I think we could all use a Corona with lime, Jimmy Buffet on the stereo, and a place to prop up our feet.

I applaud you, young man, but what you have envisioned would be better served by studying some existing sailing apps, to get an idea of what the successful app developers have included in their apps. There are sooooo many scenarios, as you have no doubt found out by reading the responses so far. You have embarked on a quite lofty adventure.

Best of luck!
