Re: Sailing from Mediterranean via Suez Canal to Seychelles
So does this now open up the route Med -> Australia via Sri Lanka, etc? Working through SE Asia would be into head winds but we're not in a rush...
And how safe is the Gulf of Aden? Have there been any reported attacks on smaller vessels recently?

We will see this month as February is the time most do the transit.
Only an utter fool would stop in Aden at the moment. But I am sure many will say its safe. Safe way to get killed...

Aden doesn't really hold much interest for me, but it is an easier route back to Aus than doing the Coconut run.
Anyways, we'll be watching the papers to see what happens....

Re: Sailing from Mediterranean via Suez Canal to Seychelles
Hang on a sec, I misread that previous post.
I think its foolhardy to stop in the city of Aden, Yemen.
As for transiting the Gulf of Aden, I think we will have a better idea by the end if this month.
Sorry for the confusion

ya can get killed anywhere along the way, not only in Yemen.. and yes , its not advisable to stop over in Aden at the mo, although the port is open, port of Al Mukalla is open too

Re: Sailing from Mediterranean via Suez Canal to Seychelles
Al Mukalla has been the main Yemen pirate base, people smuggling base for decades. Stuffed if I know why cruisers kept stopping in there.
If anyone is contemplating the Red Sea and GOA my advice is to do it non-stop and right up the gizzards of the IRTC. Leave the actual cruising to safer places.
A war ship and their helicopters are not allowed to leave their patrol box on the IRTC to come help some boat in trouble nearer the coast. Remember that old adage: a soldier can't leave his post.
Also if you are in Yemini teritorial waters the good guys can't help you anyway unless they get permission from the Yemini 'government'. Dunno how long that takes but its unlikely to be quick.
Hopefully this transit season will be safe and next year things continue to get better for cruisers.
Its exactly 5 years since the 4 Americans were shot dead.

Re: Sailing from Mediterranean via Suez Canal to Seychelles
Well its certainly not a leisure cruise.. Thats for sure.. if ya happen to find yourself in that area....
Permission to enter (south) Yemen ports, if you really have to, must be asked at Saoudi forces that are protecting/patrolling the ports, together of whats left of yemeni "goverment army, in advance

Re: Sailing from Mediterranean via Suez Canal to Seychelles
Hi Mark, when you say "do it non stop" where to where? What sort of distance?
Sorry maybe showing my ignorance here.
Cheers Dale.

Re: Sailing from Mediterranean via Suez Canal to Seychelles
Hi Ric,
How are you? Jo tells me you like the boat? Once you have a phone number (local?) or a new skype name let me know, please. I assume you have wifi and internet connection to monitor your email?
Cheers
Wilhelm
