Sail Like a Girl team wins Race to Alaska 2018

This sailing team “Sail Like A Girl” just won the 2018 “Race to Alaska” event.

Read the good article to understand what that means, what they accomplished, what the conditions were like, and their motivation.

Interesting facts: their boat was engineless, but had two cycling stations on the stern to propel using propellers. They had a large crew on the small boat, and only two at a time could sleep in the small “coffin like” cabin in the stern.

The first prize is $10,000.

Second prize is a “set of six steak knives.”

Brava!

They were also the first mono hull to win the race. Apparently there were a lot holes with no wind. They'd set the boat up with multiple rowing stations and two bicycle powered propellors so were able to keep moving when the wind died with that large a crew to supply the power. The boat is a Melges 32 so a great sailor as well when there was wind. A little cramped for an eight woman or any person crew though. Wouldn't reccomend it for a circumnavigation.

For those not familiar, there are few rules for the race. It's get to Alaska however you can in any kind of floating object just don't use an engine. Entries ranged from Kayaks to largish sailboats.

Peter,
Thanks for adding your comment on the race.

That is my understanding too (any boat, any way, just no engine) and I think that adds to the fun of the event.

It was smart of this team to utilize their human power, especially if winds were light along the route (as I have read before they can be).

That's awesome! Probably the toughest boat race in the country. I've been thinking about doing the Everglades Challenge but it pales in comparison.

Its a great race but does exclude all us people who may enter but need to lock out our engine.

Crazy people crazy times we are jealous.
