Rockall pirated

This is the second time only this time Sabrine was murdered, we had a few days with them sharing meals and stories so its a shock for us. RIP Sabrine. And we hope Jurgen is ok.

Re: Rockall pirated

This is what concerns me about cruising in some areas, specifically the PI and other places where these goons lurk. This sort of issue is also why I am so vexed about the rules I keep hearing about relative to having defensive weapons on board a slow at best vessel when transiting those areas. This saddens me greatly, and I send wishes and prayers to everyone who has lost loved ones under any circumstances, especially these.

So what do you propose we all carry guns, missiles, grenades, etc,etc
If you start shooting what then i figure your going to die especially if you shoot one of them, were in plastic light wooden boats and only one of us they are in fast motor boats and several at the same time Ive read, how do you defend yourself, better off staying away until the govt's of these areas see that they need to clean them up and do it, there are still more reasonably safe places in the world than most of us can explore in a lifetime.

Re: Rockall pirated

I have not been kidnapped, nor held hostage by pirates so I cannot speak from experience. But I would have thought after one life threatening, traumatic experience a person would be inclined to stay away from any area where even the possibility of problems with pirates was possible. The world has become a dangerous place for anyone sailing a private boat in international waters, the good thing is we are made aware of the trouble spots on the globe and can avoid them. With a little common sense and an abundance of caution we do not have to give up our dreams. This story is tragic, but seems to have been avoidable. If you are going to take crazy unnecessary risks at some point you will be called upon to pay the price.

Re: Rockall pirated

Not piracy. Murder, terrorism, kidnapping, yes. But not piracy. Piracy is crime that is committed on the high seas.

This was in the Phillipines. Hold the Philippine government responsible for this tragedy. It is their jurisdiction. Do not give them a pass by calling this crime something it is not.

Very sad. My heart goes out to the family and the victims.

Here’s how he explained it:

“... In a 2009 interview with news agency AFP, Mr Kantner said he would never stop sailing despite having been subjected to a mock execution during the pair's first kidnapping ordeal in 2008.

"My boat is my life and I don't want to lose her, nothing more. I don't care about pirates and governments," he said from Berbera, the main port in Somaliland...”

His boat is his life and he did not want to lose her. That is a common sentiment among sailors.

But, in this case there was another "her" and she (his wife Sabine) was lost.

People are more important than any boat.

It is a sad story, most especially tragic for Sabine.

Re: Rockall pirated

There are 2 or 3 threads running here about this sad story.

The moderators should wake up and combine them.

Re: Rockall pirated

Contrary to what you might think, moderators don't read every thread. You could help them out in a case like this by alerting them with a PM, or simply report the first post.

Re: Rockall pirated

I hadn't combined as they are different, at least I think they are.
They are about the same incident, but have taken different points of view.
Combining usually kills all but one point of view

RIP. Sad to hear about the news. Hopefully she didn't suffer much and they were living life on their own terms.

Can we respectfully keep the thread about the event and not spiral into a fruitless argument about bearing arms and risk perception?

Re: Rockall pirated

cruisers need to be aware of political changes occurring on our planet.
as the political situations change, so do cruising areas.
phillipines once was a usa territory.possession. aint no more. china is new associate.
accordingly, politics are different now than earlier.
duterte swears to rid planet of his terror groups, specifically the ones affiliated with this incident.
unfortunately those under way have no real source of news. things change while we cruise.

The mods are well awake and continually looking to keep the CF free of rudeness and antagonism along with other duties..

But thank you for your concern.

You would think... but there are now travel agencies that specialize in vacations for crazy people seeking vacations in war zones.
