Re: Rental Car For Cruiser

Enterprise can be tricksters in the US. My neighbor used to work for them, and generously said "Here, use my 'friends and family' extra discount code." And when I used the special employee-discount pricing code? A "Hertz Local" rate was still 25% lower.

"Hertz Local" is a program where Hertz takes reservations, picks up and drops off cars locally, i.e. to a body shop or other reseller who has contracted with them. There are usually no cars in inventory at those locations, unless you've called ahead and placed the reservation. But it can save miles from the pickup distance, and often is cheaper than a regular Hertz location.

Re: Rental Car For Cruiser

I have a title to a
84 bmw
I saw it once in a junkyard
Has been crushed I think
A guy gave it to me years ago to pay my fee
He had no cash
Valid Florida title
DMV swears it's ok to tag and insure
I Renew tag every year
Insured with Geico for many years
Drive a 2015 Buick Lacrosse
Corporate lease thru my business
Only insurance is on the bmw and i pay the lease with a gold visa
For double coverage
Works great

By a car title and insure it

Re: Rental Car For Cruiser

We use the Geico non-owners policy for Liability coverage (major credit card for Collision). The policy for two drivers costs around $145 for 6 months. We wouldn't risk going w/out Liability so the cost evens out compared to paying per rental if we rent a car for a week or more per year.

Keeping a policy with Geico has the advantage of continuous coverage when the time comes when we're car owners again. We'd heard from cruising friends who had dropped auto insurance for a few years and then went back to land that their auto insurance costs were sky high as if they were starting from scratch.

Also, somewhere I came across this website [autoslash.com] and have used it for about three car rentals this year. There are so many specials, regional deals and on-line coupons out there these days. They do that work behind the scenes, compare auto rentals in the area for you and if you like the bottom-line you can book right through them.

Re: Rental Car For Cruiser

Here in the UK there are many insurers who offer rental car annual cover.
This covers all optional add-on insurances on any car you rent and is for 12 months.
Typically the annual premium is less than 5 days liability etc.
I would be surprised if this is not available in other countries.
A decent broker would advise you.

Re: Rental Car For Cruiser

Just maybe an off the wall suggestion? Look at insuring a junker. Generally in the US your insurance covers you on rentals. Liability would be my major concern. Depending on how much you need a rental. Maybe dumb but give it a look see.

Re: Rental Car For Cruiser

Insurance coverages are often heavily regulated and vary widely with country. The EU, which mandates many consumer protections that the US does not, may well mandate liability coverage. But, do they (are any of the credit cards) also include the :economic damages for loss of use" which mean you also must pay the rental company for their daily loss of income while they take their time repairing that unusable car?

There's always a "gotcha". Even with Geico's "liability only" policy, they (at least used to) offer that only to existing long-term customers. Newcomers need not apply.

USAA? Forget it, unless you're military.

We just discovered Turo.com, and are driving a car we found there at 1/2 the next best price I could find.

Re: Rental Car For Cruiser

Ride sharing, asset sharing...Great for not costing a lot up front, but the entanglements and liability are still very real. Wait for a couple of Turo (or even Uber) cases to go to court over liability claims, and in some states, vicarious liability claims, and for insurers to say "Hey, that's commercial use, not our problem."

Not at all the same as renting a car from a legitimate business that already has all these things down pat.

Well, you can resist doing things differently than the corporate way it's always been done. Me, I'll embrace the crowd sourced, resourced sharing internet economies. Turo has worked well for me so far, and I'll keep using it. Just like I'll keep using AirBNB. JOSO.

Re: Rental Car For Cruiser

I take travel insurance with a hire car excess so gives me medical cover as well. In some countries eg Australia can buy insurance on line for hire car excess at far cheaper prices than the rental companies

I agree that a lot of details are yet to be ironed out with the "sharing economy."

But my understanding is that companies like Uber DO insure their drivers. Likewise home-sharing sites like Air B&B, even dog-walking sites.

Companies like Uber have tons of money, large legal teams, and are highly motivated to keep horror stories out of the news. Even if you end up being a test case, I don't think you'll be hung out to dry.

There must be accidents in Uber cars every day. There no doubt have already been quite a few liability claims. This isn't totally new territory any more.

Re: Rental Car For Cruiser

you want to minimize your insurance costs???
ride public transportation, use a bicycle, alternatives to cars rented and or owned are much more efficient and less pricey and better for ye than a car.
changing from ownership of a car to renter of a car is not how to cut costs. have fun

Re: Rental Car For Cruiser

Warning, read your credit card agreement. I use two cards for renting cars and both agreements say the same thing. If you take any insurance plan from the agency your card coverage is void.

In the US I use a Bank of America Platinum because it covers collision & liability to $100,000 In Mexico and central America the Wells Fargo card has similar benefits.

Good luck, Woody

Yeah that wouldn't work in the great white north because here in Canada insurance companies rip us off so badly by requiring insurance on each vehicle rather than on drivers. It's a big insurance co cash grab ......they must know something I don't know about how it's possible for me to drive more than one vehicle at a time. A fair way to do it would be to insure drivers separately from vehicles. The actual vehicle insurance and registration would be much cheaper than it is today. It's a legal scam imo.
Getting back to the original point; when renting I go with the insurance on my credit card .
