Rebedding deck-hatch windows (Bomar)

Can anyone point me to a thread or link on how to remove and re-install the plastic (Lexan?) windows on the deck-hatches?

I have Bomar Cast 100 Series Hatches (about 20 years old) and the rubber seal between the window and the aluminum lid is cracking and therefore leaking, see picture.

At this stage I cannot afford to replace the hatches so I'd like to try rebedding the plastic windows. The hatches do not leak from anywhere else.

I'm thinking using "BoatLife Silicone Rubber" , anyone recommends something else, rather?

Thanks,
Erik

I've used Select. Not cheap but absolutely first rate work.

I found one of those Bomars at the local salvage shop, don't know the model but it's cast aluminum with two "ribs" running side to side supporting the plastic.
I really like this hatch. Came w/o a second support strut but we were able to get a replacement very easily.

Good strong sea-worthy addition to the boat.

Good hatches are not Lexan but cast acrylic. It won't craze or crack and has great strength. That said re glazing can be required after 20 years on the best hatches. If you have cast Al frames with cast acrylic ports the reglazing should be done with the proper materials. That would include the compound to set the port plus new seals around the frames. Contacting the company its the best step. You can't just use off the shelf stuff in most cases if the hatches are quality.

if you need to pull the port / hatch then re-bedding is best with a flexible calk NOT 3M 5200. 5200 is too hard and not flexible enough for a metal port between fiberglass. There needs to be lots of give and take for that bond to work properly a long time.

I've done a lot of these... Remove acrylic, clean well (scotchbrite), mask off all edges on hatch and glass, and use Dow 795 silicone. It's used for glass in high rise buildings. Remove excess with tool immediately and pull tape before it skins over. If cleaned properly - it won't leak!

According to my local marine supply, Boat Owners Warehouse (S. FL). Bomar uses GE SSG 4000 silicone.
