Re: Qualifications

Tkeeth
It's ok I'm not racist. I live in Bradistan Yorkshire,
I have been reading loads of books but you do forget a lot of it, my mind is like a sponge, trouble is, squeezing it hard enough to get half the info back out.
I would love to do a stand watch on your trip, I don't mind grafting.

Rustic, that's sound advise. I need to get nearer the sea and join a club, I am looking forward to the comp crew course though because it's 5 days at sea with a night sail, my only other experience was 4 days down coast of NZ with a friend of my brothers which was a buzz
I have a saying which I would also like to call my boat.
Keep it lit. as in keep it alight

Forgot to mention the reason for the competent crew course is, as well as wanting to sail the world.
Lou n me are goin to Brazil for the Olympics, and have hired a 42 foot boat to sail us from the coast below Sou Pualo to Rio well an island called Ilha grande, for 4 days and I want to be able to help with the ropes and anything else Lorenzo needs a hand with.
Has anyone else ever used Airbnb
All the best Rik

Re: Qualifications

Building experience is key. But courses can be very useful too. It depends on the instructor and on you. Learn what they are teaching but ask questions too.
I just finished competent crew and day skipper over a six day live aboard course. They covered the 2 courses, but I learnt way more about being live aboard than about pure sailing.
As for it being a waste of money, the cost for me and my wife for the entire week was half of what it would of cost to bare boat charter an equivalent boat. And it covered all food, drink, marina fees, captain, and cook! Not to mention the education and certificates. And exposure to things like a water maker, all integrated electronics,AIS, radar and many other things not found on charter boats or club boats.
For the best education, imho, you need to sail as many different boats with as many different people as possible.(within safety parameters)Some experiences you will want to repeat, others not so much. But you will learn from all of them.

Re: Qualifications

Last summer I qualified for my RYA Coastal Skipper/Tidal
and have no plans to go to YM. Don't see much advantage to it.
The main reason I went across the pond and got these
even though I've been sailing for many years is because
I wanted to Crew on others boats until I eventually cast off
(Kitty building now)
Having Coastal Skipper has well been worth it
and I get invited on more boats then I have time for.
In the next 6 months I will be spending 10 to 12 weeks cruising
on 4 different boats and expect to cover 3500nm
and qualify for the Ocean Cruising Club by doing the Caribbean 1500
I do believe that having the RYA certs have helped.
One thing for sure sailing around the English Channel
given its tides and currents under the eye of a YM instructor
sure teaches you.
Highly recommended
