Printer on board

Hi,
Any recommendations for a new printer.

Cannot be Hewlett Packard - sick of their cartridge rip offs (long story, you don't need to hear it)

Usually only print a page or two at a time, probably wouldn't have done 5 at once for some years now.

Easily replaceable cartridges (not like HP, which are country specific)

Scanner on the top. Small as possible.

I tend towards Canon stuff because of a camera alliance but don't want to just buy a Canon without the input of others with good experiences.
Suggestions appreciated.

We have been cruising now since 2005 and started out with a canon inkjet printer. The printer had a very small footprint and we got great service out of it. About 2 years ago it failed and being in areas that we could not get it serviced tossed it out and bought a canon ip100 which we meets our needs very nicely. We rarely use it and when we do just for a page or two.

I have one of the canon Pixma series and it has worked faultlessly for 2 years so far. The price of ink is horrendous but that seems the case for every brand.

Get a printer/copier. Having copies of boat documents is so handy.

I don't have a printer on boat now if I had to get one I'd get one of them very old HP inkjet series 5L, 5P or some such. The cartridge lasts basically forever, unless you have a heavy office printing demands, and if it needs replacing it is only $50 on amazon and sometimes 2 for $50. The only drawback is that it's about 18"X18"X18", not small. Other than that it's a workhorse that will work when all the others conked out.

My 2nd choice would be an old Cannon BJ series. You can recharge the cartridge on the cheap. Not as reliable as the old HP but much more compact and takes up 1/4 or less of the space.

I've been using an Epsom NX125 on Boracay for a while now. While in the past I've treated my printers pretty well only to have them die on me this one just keeps on plugging on no matter what I do to it.

Sadly the NX125 is out of production now but the XP-200 looks to be the current equivalent. I like the cheap price and use the money saved to buy the Epsom cartridges (about the same price for two as the complete printer...). I only print a few pages now and then.

Oh easy... Brother.. Thats the brand you are looking for. Solid affordable printers with cheap refills (really cheap if bought on ebay).

DCP-7060D will do single page scanning and 24 ppm printing...

DCP-7065DN has a document feeder and will do 27 ppm printing plus duplex

Either can be had for under $160..

P.S. HP refills can be had for cheap on Ebay as well if you know what you are looking for. I pay about $22 for a toner cartridge for my HP 1212 and its region free.

I of course have a dumpster dive cannon printer, that was practically new. I made a printer stand out of 1/2" plywood and mounted it to the forward bulkhead above and to the side of the salon table.

Keeps it out of the way, in it's own little spot.

No practical experience with printers on boats, but came here to add that I bought a printer refill kit a couple years ago and have been quite happy with how cheap and easy it is to refill the cartridges.

Here is an affordable wireless printer, copier and scanner with cheap refills by Cannon for 39 bones. The scanner and copier will come in very handy with paper work and for uploading menus and maps to blogs web pages.

Hunted for some months since posting for the suggestions in the thread, mostly the Canon Pixma (I think the ix6850 is the small one). Couldn't locate one within reasonable distance of the boat and ended up with a Canon Pixma MG3550. No saving in footprint but at least it's not a HP.

I have never had an ink jet printer where the ink didn't dry up well before it was used up. As for HP, they make great laser printers, not so much their ink jets. My HP laser printers lasted over ten years each and were very economical to operate.

That said, my current laser printer is a Brother that cost a little over $100, connects directly to the network (I think it's wireless as well) and prints duplex (both sides of the paper.

So I would recommend a laser printer over an ink jet. You may want one brand over another because of features or availability of toner in far away places.

I bought the Canon Ip90 a few years back.. still going strong and can get ink refills for pennies.. fast and good quality printing, small enough to carry with the laptop.

I had a small/cheap Epson color inkjet/scanner (Cost was $40-$60)... but the starter ink dried out after a month or two and rather spend the stupid amount they wanted for new ink, I put it by the dumpster and bought a Brother B&W Laser.

I prefer laser printers because toner doesn't dry out and typically your cost per page is much less. It does take a bit more power to print, but I don't print that often and it's nothing a 2kw inverter can't handle.
