Petition signatures needed to help a marina in California

We all don't want to see marinas shut down without reason. There is one in the Bay area that could go bankrupt fighting a government shakedown. You can help stop the BCDC Shakedown of Westpoint Harbor marina in Redwood City CA. Read the details on the change . org site here's a link

The marina owner and the government have been at odds for a long time but they've recently thrown the book at him without even thinking about the logic of the violations.

Examples? He must have public access to the guest berths. He does: if any boat comes in, they can tie up and use the guest berths. They've reinterpreted this "public access" to mean that the pedestrians must have access to the docks for walking, running, riding their bikes, walking their dogs, etc. Similarly strange, they want the bathrooms open and unlocked 24/7 for the "public" even though the police say it's not safe. And they've decided that marking the channel means having a line of buoys down the center line of it (not the red and green markers....) and the harbor must provide that. Further violations that they're charging him with include "preventing public access" by having the "public parking" written on the pavement instead of on signs at the head of each parking place. They think the public can't see the pavement or something. That includes the DRIVE THROUGH parking places for boats on trailers. A sign in the middle of each one (preventing drive through, yes) would make them happy. Let's see...well, you get my drift. There are many fines and many allegations. The goal seems to be to bankrupt the owner and shut down the marina.

Please take the time to go read the petition, sign it, share it with your friends so they can do so too. The petition is to ask the state auditor to look into the matter.

You can read a bunch of background information here as well.

Thanks!

Won't do any good. Got kicked out of a Redwood City marina years ago so they could fill it in and build - about 9 years later....

It sounds like there is someone who wants to put up some condo's to enrich the tax base.

Sounds like that to me too. Petitions are nice, but rarely effective. If you really want to upset the apple cart then find out who the municipality is in bed with and get that story on the local news.

There's a new Latitude38 article on this here for those of you who are interested. I, too, believe there's more to it than a simple case. Please sign and share everywhere. Those of you in the Bay area, there is a BCDC meeting on this issue on Thursday, January 18th. There are a lot of public comments there already, read them if you'd like in the agenda materials.

Bay Conservation and Development Commission -- they represent the 9 local governments around the Bay (who used to regulate and give permits for development projects) as well as some state agencies but don't have oversight by anyone. Reports directly to the governor's office but the governor has a lot more to think about than this little agency.

Re: Petition signatures needed to help a marina in California

Update -- the BCDC backed down (a bit) and put off sending the official CDO to their full commission for action. In the meanwhile, the petition out there for boaters or concerned parties to sign is still available. Feel free to sign and share! There are over 4,000 signatures right now. https://www.change.org/p/westpoint-harbor
