Percentages of male solo active cruisers???

Iím a late 50ís solo male current liveaboard that is in the process transitioning from working life to active cruising.

At our harbor in Seward Alaska there are only a few liveaboards. a couple of guys and a few couples. The mix is about even, IE couples Vs soloís.

In the active cruising community, what kind of percentages are we looking at for soloís vs couples cruising?

I am just curious

Re: Percentages of male solo active cruisers???

Hi Kevin,
I dont know the exact % but here in Florida the vast majority of "live aboards" we come into contact with are couples. either very young (20's) or Older (retired) rarely do we meet people in the middle thirties to early fifties.

In the S Pacific it might be 20+ to 1 or so.

Re: Percentages of male solo active cruisers???

Our experience in many parts of the world is probably 25 to 30 couples for each solo

I think there are more couples CRUISING.

But I can see a lot of solo males living aboard saying they are cruising.

I can see that.

A large percentage of males choose liveaboard life as a transition from a shared home. They already own the boat, and itís nicer and easier than renting an apartment.

This male set up his boat as a second home so it was easy to move aboard, but in the next 12 or 24 months (I need to choose) it will be my time of life to travel while I am still young enough to be comfortable and enjoy it.

That is why I was asking...

Go for it Kevin.
Single handing to get places isn't particularly fun, but it beats being a marina mope.
The crew auditioning process has been interesting to say the least - and incredibly fun at times. Other times, it makes the divorce process a walk in the park in comparison.
Plenty of companions looking for non a-hole captains with good, safe boats.

Re: Percentages of male solo active cruisers???

I think unlike many “cruisers” I do not have a sailboat, nor do I envision myself cruising the world.

I own a aprox 50’ Pilothouse “trawler” or trawler style boat, and intend to cruise the pacific coast from my current harbor in Seward Alaska as far away as the sea of Cortez.

My first solo cruise since becoming a solo boater last summer will be a 160NM each eway week long trip from Seward Alaska to Cordova Alaska starting later this week.

A few weeks after that I’ll make a longer open water crossing to Kodiak Alaska and explore the town for another week or two.

Re: Percentages of male solo active cruisers???

I remember a while ago a similar discussion here, and one response that really stuck with me was that sailors were "60% retired couples, 39% divorced men, and 1% anything else"!

I have no idea whether that's true, but (as one of the 39%) it's a statistic I like to quote frequently

Re: Percentages of male solo active cruisers???

Sailing in the US, Caribbean and Med, we've met maybe 5 solo males - one (maybe two) were always single - the rest were in the process of letting their love of cruising crash their marriages. We actually met more guys who exactly fit that description than truly single sailors.

That is an interesting way of putting it, "crashing their marriages." Sad but true in my case. We could not afford our house, and for two years she refused to get a job to help us keep the house, so we sold it and went our separate ways, me to live on my boat and cruise and her to do whatever.

I found findacrew.net to be helpful in finding sailing mates, but you kind of need a specific travel plan to attract the right interest (start and end dates, where you want to go, boat info, etc.).

Also, at least in the San Diego area, there is a FB page for SD crew to find boats to crew on for day sails. So, maybe up in Alaska you could do the same, to start a page for Alaska Boat Crew or something like that?

Good luck.

Not much of a relationship if sailing is the supposed reason for the crash.
Pulling up stakes is usually a symptom of prior problems.
Once children are grown, or in the case of no children, each member of a relationship is responsible for their own happiness.
Hopefully the happiness can be shared, but if not, separation is the emotionally correct choice. Life is too short to be miserable because you once upon a time loved someone.
