Any medicine you need. Aloe for sunburn if the screen doesn't work could be kept in your car. Once you do this a few times, you'll figure it out.

I used to race a Sonar (kirby design) with no engine. We always brought a 6 pack to every race. When the race was over, if there was little or no wind, we would trade the beer for a tow back to the marina. No one would give us a free tow, because they felt our lack of engine (weight) gave us an unfair advantage. If there was wind to sail back, we then had the same discussion every time...keep the beer for next time, or drink it. I think you know what we chose.

I always bring a bandana. Has many uses, including piratey hat.

Personally, I always bring my faithful old garmin etrex, and my handheld VHF.

Your skipper will like you if you bring a current ma-for!

I read with amazement the different threads which state "boat shoes" are a must.
After crusing for a number of years ,( North an South Pacific) it is consider the height of bad manners to ever wear any type of foot wear on a crusing boat full stop.except sea boots but never ever off the boat.
I can not recall any one saying "leave your shoes on."
You are going sailing not trying to make a fashion statement, most cruisers can be recognised by the wrinkles in their clothes which come out on special occasions.
As for damage to the feet, it's expected
I would never think of wearing shoes on board even when in refit..
I realise that this will cause major concern for those who go out for the day once around the bout an back to the club house to tell stories, but shoes cause deck damage, carry dirt on board an if carried on board an are leather will go nice an green with mold..

As for "damage to the feet, it's expected.". Sorry, its not. Incapacitated crew/guests are a liability and if the conditions dictate boat shoes then darned well put them on. If a person has a contagious foot problem then put boat shoes on.

Its a personal choice and on my boat all proper deck shoes are welcome.

I wear Tevas (with socks if chilly)... however my pups say its not a good look -with the socks - around town or if out to dinner

Sorry to burst yer bubble but Tevas are classified as acceptable boat shoes....

However-your pups are correct!

When I think of 'boat shoes' and I think of Sperrys and stuff.... you know... those poncy leather laces and all....

I too have been cruising for a number of years (28) in the north and south Pacific, and I can't agree with your statements. Yep, some folks don't like shoes on board, others do. And we always say to guests " keep your shoes on unless you have stepped into the dog crap". This idea that a cruising boat is sacrosanct and must never be sullied with nasty shoes is just silly. I go barefoot when the wx is suitable, wear Teva type sandals most of the time, cheap trainer type shoes when too cold for sandals and sea boots (fisherman style, not yottie) when it's wet. Inside and out, too. Haven't had proper Sperry type 'boat shoes' for decades... they are uncomfortable for extended wearing, expensive, the soles go hard and slippery in too short a time, and they get moldy too easily on board in the tropics. Oh, they are silly expensive, too!

So, I don't think wearing shoes on board is the "height of bad manners" in the real world, no matter what it says in Cruising World.

But each to their own...
