Opinions wanted: Westerly 33 (Sloop)

G'day folks, I'm looking for opinions on a Westerly 33 (sloop rigged, not ketch) as a live-aboard - we're in the process of buying our cruisin' boat and the Westerly popped up as a potential candidate. From what we've seen so far they're actually quite roomy for a 33 footer, but other than that we don't know a damn thing about it's qualities and pros/cons.



So... anyone has any opinions on these boats? Do share!

Oh so British, similar construction as a Moody (good) older boats must be carefully inspected no matter how well built they were.

What decade? The late 90s "33" was a very nice boat. Hand built by careful old men in sheds, grp generally laid well -- they used to make a big deal of temperature and humidity control during the cure. Equipment very much down to the original purchaser. Woodwork good, build generally heavy, not quick but comfortable when it gets nasty.

Westerly's are great boats. Well made, solid and with good sailing qualities.

Sub 40ft is small for a liveaboard, but if that's your choice then a Westerly would tick the boxes for me!

Thanks for all the links and tips gentlefolks! As far as the decade, it'd be a 1980 - it seems to have suffered from the famed droop, but the previous owner has fixed that up nicely. It's currently on our (very) short list of candidates.


I know, 33ft isn't much to live on with 2 people but it seems doable enough, compared to a 40ft Trintella IV we looked at, it's positively enormous on the inside and has a much bigger sense of "space" so, we figure it'll work. Only one way to find out

Have sailed a Westerley Conway 36. Wonderful boat, strong and safe when making passages. Built for comfort, speed not so much.

I still own a 36 Corsair. Best boat for safety I've ever had. Strong build, good sailor, great live aboard with plenty of storage spaces.
