Morgan 38 Insurance Help

I am planning on buying Blackbird a 1971 Morgan 38 but having issues getting insurance. I live in Florida am looking at quotes up to $4,000 can anyone help?

It's not easy to find insurance on old boats. I found insurance through West Marine (originally Boat US Insurance) but my boat was only 23 years old at the time. They did require a survey.

Great old boat, I always liked the original Morgan 38 design. Not so much the newer Brewer designed Morgan 38 which in my opinion behaves like a slug, heavy on the helm and unresponsive, the complete opposite of the original.

I suppose its a difference in design goals, cruiser vs racer or something. I grew up on dinghies so I want the boat to respond when I wiggle the rudder. For crossing oceans, I suppose you want a boat that plows ahead no matter what.

Also you might consider insuring for liability only, that is no hull insurance. It's a matter of risk management.

if you are just looking for coastal liability, try your auto insurance company. Mine has not problem insuring a 1982. Actually mine has loss coverage also.

Contact IMIS. They will act as a broker and see who has the least expensive coverage. I got mine through them and it was $1600 a year for a 1984 boat.
