Mooring mega yachts

Apparently it can be tricky for mega yachts to find a good mooring, at least in Georgetown, Grand Cayman. Paul Allen apparently got fined for damaging a reef recently. His response was to pay for a "mega yacht mooring" in the harbor which appears to be nothing more than a big anchor and a buoy:

I guess I don't get this. Georgetown has a deep water wharf that regularly docks 500-foot vessels. Is there some reason Allen doesn't want to just tie up at the commercial wharf?

He didn't exactly pay for the mooring, the funds the island received from his fine were used to pay for the mooring.

Having worked on a "mega yacht" as crew, the last place I ever wanted to tie up the boat was a commercial wharf. they're not usually "compatible" with the pristine topsides and the squishy soft fenders used to keep pristine topsides.

At their heart, a mooring is nothing but an anchor with chain and a buoy.....That said, the choice of anchor for the mooring is dubious for the intended purpose.

I think it is great that the government used the fine to directly address the prevention of future acts which caused the fine in the first place. Too often fines disappear into the darkness of bureaucracy or worse, into the general fund.

Here in Tasmania the boat and mooring registration fees are spent on boating facilities, like launch ramps and floating docks, works well.

That's great. Somethings here in the U.S. work that way but far too often the fines and fees disappear. Thanks for sharing some good news!
