Re: missing children on sailboat

Couple of things about this story bother me. When I first heard about it I was thinking this guys was some Meth Head from the media reports. Turns out it was recreational pot use. Then media and Police reported he was at part of an anti government rally. Turns out it was a TEA (Taxed Enough Already) Party rally. Hardly an Occupy Wall Street group. What really is worrisome though is that there was a major search on for the couple. They were still able to get on a sailboat and sail off to Cuba with none of the authorities able to find them despite it being Florida where drug interdiction and patrols on land, water and air are so common. Yet they managed somehow to get away and make it all the way to Cuba.

Seems pretty standard performance to me...

The couple and kids are back in the US. Cuba made a deal.

Re: missing children on sailboat

Cuba didn't "make a deal." Cuba has an extradition treaty with the United States, and we have one with them. The "deal" was made many years ago. Both countries routinely send wanted criminals back to the other when they can. Cuba just did what they have done many times before in honoring the extradition treaty.

They showed him on TV this morning, and he does have those crazy eyes, though.

I'm guessing most people in his situation would have some serious crazy eye. He is in hot water big time.

Not to mention holidays with the inlaws will be a little more interesting from now on. Of course that will be a few years down the line.

Based on the charges they stuck him with, it will be quite a few years down the line. His kids will probably be grown before they release him. Sad, but maybe it's for the best.

According to the report they took the family dog as well.
Just from that one fact alone it seems to me this is a tight family that only wanted to be together.

Doesn't look like Cuba is the place to go in such circumstances:

Personally I am sorry for seeing it end this way. But I think it was only a matter of time. I hope they see both sides of the issue at his trial.

I hope they get a fair trial.

I was talking to a LEO friend of mine about this case and he said in the last few years it seems like parent(s) with drug convictions (any type) are more likely to keep their kids than a parent(s) with the same or lesser drug charges but own a firearm (legal or not). There isn't any statistical data to back this up but was merely a personal observation. To me this guy seemed less scary (before this latest incident) and had not yet been convicted of the drug charges before losing his kids. I'm not a lawyer but that just doesn't seem fair having a clean history to that point from what reports have said.

Re: Missing Children on Sailboat

They certainly won't do well in Cuba if they are "anti-government"
I heard this story on the radio, but assumed it was some anti-Castro Miami BS. Sure is a crazy story. Cuba will certainly be kicking them out after there 30 day visa expires.
