Miles Traveled

This is another one of those "get to know our community threads".

In another thread (http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...tml#post801016) one of our favourite contributors mentioned the number of miles she has travelled. I thought it would be interesting to hear how far other members have sailed and under what conditions?

To get it started, I will state my modest record:

I have sailed over summer vacations for 10 years now in inland waters. The most I have done in one season is about 600 miles. The most I have done in a day is 50-60 miles. My daily average is probably about 20-30 miles per day. I have not (intentionally) sailed at night but I have sailed during a couple gales although I have rarely, if ever, been in waves greater than 6ft.

What are your stats?

Hong Kong to northern Luzon then down to Manila then down and out the straights to Yap, Ulithy Guam...then sailing around the Marianas.
Coastal Leb and to Cyprus and back..

Edit...that's hand steering all the way and taking noon shots..so I thing I get double the miles?

travelling vs daysails? do you want ALL stats? totalling from age 7 to now in day sails and catalina trips, delivery trips, cruising, and playing????
is somewhere over 10k miles. sea conditions and storms--- from first squall inhus=dson at age 9, to 30 ft pacific seas--not that uncommon, in winter, and gulf storms and sudden winds in pacific, which happen, winds from zero to 71kts measured(scary) and seas from flat and glassy to 30 ft pacific rollers day after a storm in el nino 1994, jan.
i haven't done much yet. i still have yet to sail atlantic and chessy, and south pacific, nor have i circumnavigated. i still have to make panama and the canal and more caribean on this trip--i have only just begun this adventure.

Yep, all that and more. Even windsurfers can chime in.

I bet 71kts was scary.

is LOOONG way and with celestial nav---give james the award--!!!!!

71 kts was major................but was fun sailing despite skeeredeness.....sloop is a major handful over 50 kts--woulda rather not been in those, but they caught us in mid passage with no running place to hide. we were 100mi out in gulf. was FUN sailing but super alertness was definitely ON.

OK, FWIW:

1977-1984: Yankee 30, 25,000 miles, mostly coastal plus one RT to Hawaii. Still working full time.

1984-2003: Palmer Johnson Standfast 36 (IOR one-tonner), 86,000 miles, all between SF and Australia, lots of meandering. Full time cruising after 1986.

2003 to present: Jon Sayer 46' one-off, 39,000 miles, South Pacific eddy, full time cruising except for medical stays in the US.

Obviously, in that period we've experienced a lot of different conditions from cyclones to flat calms. We seem to be getting better at avoiding the nasty stuff!

About 85,000 miles on my own boat, and more on OP boats. Sailing Other People's boats can be just as much fun, and its a lot cheaper--after a while they pay you!

Ya, I would agree. That is an impressive track.

How was your experience going around the southern capes? And Iceland too! Cool (in more ways than one).

Nothing to be ashamed of, that is for sure! Heck,the furthest I have gotten from home is 300Nm!

Mostly terrific, except a fellow cruising boat was lost with all hands near us at cape horn (60kts) - one we handled quite well.

And Iceland too!

Again mostly terrific (but yes cold - force 10 snow storm on June 4th) but we almost lost the boat there, in a terrible stupid mistake. Just plain dumb luck and an absolute unwillingness to give up saved the boat.

I am hoping Greenland next summer, but that will depend on our work situation.

My daughter had over 2600 bluewater miles by the time she was twelve and is building her first boat this winter.

For us, the most miles on a single offshore passage is about 800.

We sailed weekends on the Chesapeake Bay for about 10 years on our Tayana 37, Yab-Yum. In 1999, we sailed/cruised from Annapolis to our new home in Southwest Florida. We found Yab-Yum's near 6' draft no match for the shallow Gulf and Caribbean water so we decided to give up sailing for cruising and bought a trawler Amapola.

Since 1999, we travel from 3-6 months a year on our 48' trawler Amapola. Our cruising grounds are the Caribbean and the ICW. When moving between anchorages, we travel 30-50 miles per day, or in the islands 10-30 miles per day. Our trips average 1100-1500 miles per year.

We don't like to travel at night but have done it on occasion out of necessity. We've been in a few squalls although rarely, if ever, been in waves greater than 6ft. We keep Amapola at our home dock. We are preparing to head out soon for the Bahamas. Amapola is on the hard getting a bottom job. We hope to see you along the way.

It wouldn't be fair for me to compare miles, I've been a professional mariner since I was 18, and a commercial fisher since 9, and a sailing cruiser since 17. And I don't ever want to think about how many air miles, I have accumulated in pursuit of my profession. Right now I get about 60,000 a year or so these days, and are my arms tired! Once I hang up my spurs, I am never getting on a plane again, and if I can't get there by boat, I ain't goin!
