manual windlass repair

Does anyone know who might repair/rebuild an old Muir manual windlass?
I have a muir Hercules HM - 1200 that needs work.

Re: manual windlass repair

Take it to a local machine shop and they'll take care of it. I did so with my SL 555 Sea Tiger.

Re: manual windlass repair

i repaired/reconditioned mine a few years ago - manual 2 speed muir hercules. I got a piece of marine grade aluminium from a local aluminium supplier and made a new baseplate because the old one was corroded away, drained all the muddy old grease out of the winch - i found that it cant be dismantled so i just soaked it full of diesel for a few days and then filled it with 90 weight oil and fitted the new baseplate with a good amount of silicone to ensure a seal. Its been running flawlessly ever since. With the new oil it gradually loosened back up to a good working load which is why i pulled it apart in the first place - it was very stiff.

Out of interest did you get your windlass sorted.

I bought an old one about 5 years ago, completely seized, cracked casting,
and wrong sized chain gypsy. $50-

Rebuilt it myself, new bushings, welded casting, and recut worn keyways and regalvanised handle and found correct gypsy in scap heap. $300- invested.

Its been going like a German marching band ever since. I love it. Would love to know what the engineering term/ design of the free floating spring loaded cog ratchet mechanism is called.
