Talking Looking for affordable French Polynesia Adventure

Greetings,

Spent some time off Taha'a this past December and making plans to go back this year. I would like to find an affordable bareboat/live aboard opportunity for the end of Dec while the wife and I are down there again. Thanks for all your suggestions in advance.

Fair winds,
Dennis

Re: Looking for affordable French Polynesia Adventure

Excuse me, you put the word "affordable" in the same line as "French Polynesia".

Tahiti Yacht Charters advertises Sunsail at Raiatea, just across from Tahaa.

Not knowing what is affordable to you, I cannot say if you would find it so.....but I did have to chuckle at Mark J's comment. We've always thought FP expensive.

Ryan Lambert on Soul Rebel (Skye 51) will take on guests now and then. Safe competent affable skipper. Loves to surf snorkel and be off the grid. Well maintained very nice boat. Less expensive than a bareboat. Best way to reach him is on Facebook.

Re: Looking for affordable French Polynesia Adventure

I am thanking my lucky stars to find a smartass Auzzie right off the bat. I do appreciate the responses. We stayed at Le Taha'a the week before Christmas and I now have the bug. I am the son of a sailor and always wanted to get out there. I see several affordable boats for sale, know that it is difficult to live on the economy but it can be done. Thank you Vets Sailing (Roger) for some direct input.

My buddy has a Lafitte 44 that I have helmed, but he has it in Grenada and I do not get down there much. His neighbor in San Rafael has a 26' and he is going to be taking us both out to improve our experience base.

Re: Looking for affordable French Polynesia Adventure

Maybe try to cut a long-term, off-season deal with the Moorings or other charter operators down there. I was half-owner of a Mooring boat there (Raiatea) for four years. Despite what others say if you stay away from hard liquor, even beer (hard to do, I know) and go for fresh fish, great bread, French wine, market fresh vegetables and frozen New Zealand lamb the costs will be lower or not much more that here in Hawaii.

Great place, I'd live there if they'd let me.

Re: Looking for affordable French Polynesia Adventure

There are inexpensive boats listed in Tahaa Raiatea. Buy the boat, fly in, sell the boat, fly out.

Re: Looking for affordable French Polynesia Adventure

Wish I could give you some positive news but my wife and I are locals on Moorea and we have yet to find much affordable here in French Polynesia. Over in Fiji however it's much cheaper.

French wine has cost many a great deal.

Re: Looking for affordable French Polynesia Adventure

This isn't a half bad idea. You could get a group together where one buys the boat, uses it for a month or two, then sells it to the next person and so on. It could work if the transfer costs aren't too high.

Re: Looking for affordable French Polynesia Adventure

How does one find someone with such a common name on Facebook? I just did a FB search and got several hits, none of which look like your guy. I'd be interested in contacting him.
