Lewmar steering on a Bavaria 42 sailboat

Hi i have a bavaria sailboat with two steering stations made by Lewmar
Both wheels keep popping out of their bearing. I can still steer but i have to hammer it back in. This is at the top of the pedestal where the wheel turns. Anyone know the name of the replacement parts and where can I buy them?

Could a start point be Lewmar's website? Don't they have diagrams of their equipment, like, for example, Edson, who also make steering gear? Wouldn't it help if you knew the name of the part(s) you are looking for? How can we know just what it is you're hammering?
Good luck.

I have looked at Lewmar without success. I am sure other boaters have had the same problem with the Lewmar steering system. Perhaps they could help me. Bavaria built crappy boats and I would not reccomend one .

Please, forgive me, but don't you own a Bavaria? Crappy?

C'mon, you have an equipment failure that Bavaria happened to employ on your boat.

Yes, the Lewmar website may leave a LOT to be desired, but have you tried, ahem, Google?

Really.

Have you?

I'd start with "Lewmar sailboat steering gear."

Go from there.

Good luck.

Isn't there a Bavaria owners website or Google or Yahoo group?

Often of immense value.

Surely readers can expect better than this.

As Stu said: Work with the all-knowing Ms. Google. She should always be the first person you turn to.

But have a go this. It will give you the basic terminology for the bits involved in wheel steering:

Then you can come back and tell us with precision just what bit it is you are abusing with an 'ammer :-)

Hammer is a temp repair. The wheel is attached to a rod that has a spindle on it. On the spindle is a chain that turms the rudder. The rod turns in a bearing the bearing keeps falling out making it difficult to steer. Ihave a Bavaria and it is junk.

Re: Lewmar steering on a Bavaria 42 sailboat

How about this: "The wheel is mounted on a shaft by means of a taper with a Woodruff key. The shaft runs in bearings mounted in the pedestal and bears within the pedestal a sprocket upon which works a chain that connects via cables to the tiller in the lazarette. The hub of the socket is held in position on the shaft by a drift pin which also transmits the turning motion from shaft to sprocket. The shaft's forward axial motion is constrained by a thrust bearing, and its aft axial motion by the sprocket riding on a thrust bearing.

So just what is it that's come adrift for you? Is it the drift pin? You can determine the nature of the problem by dismounting the top plate of the pedestal. To do that you'll in all likelihood have to revove the compass.

In any case, the foot bone connects to the ankle bone which connects to the shin bone... There really isn't anything complicated or difficult about it.

There is, of course, a basic lesson to be learned: NEVER forget about Occam's Razor. NEVER make something on which your life depends unnecessarily complicated. Why no stop at the tiller steering? ALL boats have tillers. Wheel-steered boats just do their best to conceal that and to pretend that they are Dodge Rams :-)!

Not complicated the bearing pops out and i push it back in. It is a case of worn parts. All I need is a few parts. But I need to know if i can get them.

I have a Bav44. The dual wheel system was made by Whitlock. Then Lewmar bought them. Diagrams are available. And yes, the Lewmar site is not very good for spares info.
My Bav44 has the steering inside a f/g binnacle construction, but there is access. Are noted above if you remove the wheels and drop the chains you can remove the shafts and replace the bearing, if that’s what’s needed.
I’ll look for the diagram I found for Whitlock dual wheels set up.
And while it’s not perfect, I wouldn’t swap my Bav44. Love it . Been living aboard 5 years.

Russ, the Lewmar diagram is too large to upload. I can email if you want.
