Laura Dekker's book out in English

After reading it, confirms that she is a born Cruiser. She wasn't seeking fame or fortune but rather wanted to return to the cruising lifestyle that she was born into. She did use the fact that she would be the youngest to solo circumnavigate to pick up sponsors but after the Dutch Government got involved and blocked her efforts, most of those early sponsors pulled out.

Unlike Abby and Jessica, Laura cruised for the love of sailing, and she still is cruising.

There was no fan fare on the English release of her book, hence after almost a month there has been only 3 reviews of her book on Amazon.

Come on folks on CF, even though Laura won't admit to being a cruising junkie, she is and deserves our support. Buy her book, enjoy it, and leave a review.

Exactly!!! She has no media department. Last month she gave a presentation at Squaw Valley (Lake Tahoe), my old stomping grounds just 40 miles from where I now live. I had no idea until after the fact.

Well dekky, can't say its big news anymore, ya know? Her home movie was kinda boring all in and out.

Thats not to say it isn't a big deal or worth admiring. I certainly was impressed.

But it's time to move on to Taylor Swift.

Re: Laura Dekker's book out in English

Well Salty I still think it is a big deal and here is why. For all of history the Dutch have had a proud seafaring tradition that now has been tarnished by their treatment of Dekker. I speak as an insider in the maritime industry, Dutch deckofficers have always been in high demand. To regain the Dutch dominance in the merchant marine they have to denounce the actions of their petty, ego driven Child Protection Services and issue a worldwide apology to Laura. Owners of shipping companies prefer to entrust their investments to individuals from countries that embrace their seafaring roots and The Netherlands just shot themselves in the foot over the Laura saga.

Before I retired there was the old saying "If you ain't Dutch you ain't much". Now my former colleagues that aren't Dutch have a counter to that "If your Dutch you don't know much" referring to that government's inability to recognize seamanship skills.

Is this what she claims or what you think?

I think some might disagree.

Both. She admits that she attracted her sponsors with the fact she would be the youngest, but after Child Protective Services created a big stink most of those sponsors bailed.

She is just a cruising junkie that between her and her dad didn't have much coin to pull it off. Now that she has pulled it off, she is still cruising and paying her own way with presentations and book royalties. My hat is off to her. 19 and has been on her own for the last 5 years.

I saw a movie done about her and it pretty inspiring. She's got salt water for blood. Amazing young lady. Good for her!

IMHO "attracting sponsors" and "not seeking fame or fortune" simply do not belong together.

Re: Laura Dekker's book out in English

I enjoyed her home movie (watched it on Netflix). It does inspire young people, particularly young women. Frankly I find it tiring when people nitpick and second guess decisions, reasons for actions and motivations. Can't we as a sailing community just enjoy this girls achievements. After all...when it comes to sailing few of us will ever come close to matching hers.

Re: Laura Dekker's book out in English

I agree with Deckofficer. I have followed Laura since the start of her odyssey and unless I am being totally snowed she is the real deal. I have meet others that have done this and from what I can tell Laura s the real deal. She is still sailing and living on her boat and the fact that when she finished her round the world voyage she jumped back on and sailed back to New Zealand speaks volumes.

Hello there,

I have tried to buy Laura's book on Amazon and it says ''Pricing information not available''.

Also, if you input her name or the Title, there is nothing showing!

That is odd. Maybe this link will work.

Re: Laura Dekker's book out in English

Purchased the book yesterday for Kindle. Thanks Deckofficer for starting the thread, otherwise I may have missed it. I watched her movie a while ago was very impressed. I am more than happy to support her by buying her book. What a great young women. If she can make money while doing what she loves all the more power to her...go Laura.

Re: Laura Dekker's book out in English

Mmmm, thanks for the link, but the same thing is there, right under where it mentions the three reviews, ''Pricing information not available''.

Plainly I am doing something wrong, but this is NOT the first book I have bought either for a Kindle or as a normal book from Amazon!
