Re: Jolly Roger, Pirates and Political Correctness
I find the flying of any flag other than the U. S. Flag, one's yacht club burgee and one's private signal to be in bad taste. Owner ashore and meal flags the obvious exceptions.
Flag protocol is still alive and well, even if no one on the mass produced Clorox bottles some call boats has a clue what its all about.
I put pirate flags in the same camp as flags with beer glasses. Tacky.

Re: Jolly Roger, Pirates and Political Correctness
if all you will fly is us colors, your yacht club burgee, and your private signal, what are you going to use in another country. will you fly the courtesy flags?

Re: Jolly Roger, Pirates and Political Correctness
Is it somewhat interesting that one of the ads that shows up at the top of this page is for "Pirate Jolly Roger Flags"?

Re: Jolly Roger, Pirates and Political Correctness
If someone genuinely feels that the flying of a Jolly Roger indicates the presence of either Pirates (or people providing support to Pirates, material or simply encouragement - all the same in the modern world).....then they have the options of either:-
a) effecting a boarding to capture the Pirates
b) sinking the vessel
c) informing the appropriate authorities
Of course if someone is just wanting to whine about what some others do - log onto the internet..........

So,.... is it wrong that I have a potato cannon on board that can shoot a potato 1/4 of a mile consistently and accurately?
The trick is to rifle the barrel. Potatoes are just edible cannon balls.

I think as long as ppl are responsible enough to make they're own choices and not put themselves or others in harms way, they should be aloud to do what ever makes them feel good. Weather that's flying a jolly roger, shooting a potato gun or simply whining on the net. Life is short everyone should make the best of it. Okay ill put away my soap box now.....ha

Re: Jolly Roger, Pirates and Political Correctness
There are 3 boats on my dock that fly the Black Flag. All have children. I wonder if the Jolly Roger might help us spot other "kid" boats out there....

Re: Jolly Roger, Pirates and Political Correctness
Is this one O.K.???
Don't hate me 'cuz I'm beautiful. I was born in Oakland, CA (USA) and my parents were Raider fans, so are my siblings as well as my children. It's a curse really.
Back on topic.... This thread has been a good read. Interesting, educational and eye opening. I could care less if someone is flying the Jolly Roger. To each their own.
Now back to your regular scheduled bantering.

You hit the nail squarely on the head buddy, but quite a few posters here can't see the wood for the trees:
'Don't care if you're a good bloke, as long as you fly a jolly roger I'm not interested'

Re: Jolly Roger, Pirates and Political Correctness
Lots of posts interesting to read.
Does'nt it all come down to intent?
We all have a reason for what we do.
Sometimes younger/less experinced people would do "silly things" just for the fun of it without having any specific aim, which older/more experinsed people would dislike either becouse of an experiece or knowledge that they have.
I have a 17 years old son, who is very inteligent but not very smart. He like to push peoples bottons verbaly. It will get him into trouble one day.
Also I think in generally there is less respect in the world today
With regards to the Jolly Roger I would not feel worried in a public or turist area, where lots of traffic and boats but if I was on the open ocean known to potentional piratcy with my wife and child and saw another boat in the distance with the JR I think I would take my precaution.
