Not at all. Moby Dick is an exploration of the psyche of a man with an obsession and where it takes him - sort of theme for all ages only the context varies. Whereas Jack London's stuff is primarily adventure stories - in which the settings are dependant upon the circumstances of a particular age.

No problem. Perhaps you should go back to catching up on your chapter books, such as London, and when you are ready for something that might stretch the intellect, such as allegory, head over to an elementary 19th century American Literature class.

Yeah, I kinda get that, and my personal philosophy does not include ridiculing another CF member,or anyone for that matter, for their choice of literature.

I read for entertainment for the most part, not for moral uplifting or cosmic enlightenment or having my heart rendered. We don't have a TV, seldom view movies... we read a lot of books. Some are trash, some pretty good, some are downright enlightening (not so damn many, that)... but I don't feel the need to denigrate someone else's choice of entertainment, even when it is distasteful to me.

Self appointed judges of literary greatness... well, they sound a lot like freshman english lit students pontificating over a few too many beers... all experts in what YOU should read, and how you should interpret it.

Fie upon them...

All you are doing is enabling and being co-dependent. You need to fight for good lit. People on boats don't have wall to throw their bad books against. I suggest a good tanker when you get the chance.

London made his money by selling episodes to newspapers. Nothing new there. Charles Dickens did the same.
