Not at all. Moby Dick is an exploration of the psyche of a man with an obsession and where it takes him - sort of theme for all ages only the context varies. Whereas Jack London's stuff is primarily adventure stories - in which the settings are dependant upon the circumstances of a particular age.

You appear both confuse and justify misplaced critique with the stories and their themes.

Wrong. Your fail, and you are smart enough to know it, but not wise enough to admit it.

In any event, if you need the last word, go ahead. I shall not reply.

Fair winds.

Ahhh, ain't it grand? Internet intellectuals arguing about philosophical constructs on a sailing forum... sheesh...

No problem. Perhaps you should go back to catching up on your chapter books, such as London, and when you are ready for something that might stretch the intellect, such as allegory, head over to an elementary 19th century American Literature class.

Yeah, I kinda get that, and my personal philosophy does not include ridiculing another CF member,or anyone for that matter, for their choice of literature.

I read for entertainment for the most part, not for moral uplifting or cosmic enlightenment or having my heart rendered. We don't have a TV, seldom view movies... we read a lot of books. Some are trash, some pretty good, some are downright enlightening (not so damn many, that)... but I don't feel the need to denigrate someone else's choice of entertainment, even when it is distasteful to me.

Self appointed judges of literary greatness... well, they sound a lot like freshman english lit students pontificating over a few too many beers... all experts in what YOU should read, and how you should interpret it.

Fie upon them...

Jim

@Jim I don't abide by passive or California group hug lit, saying "Oh everything is sooo beautifuly and as long as it's not being mean to children... Peace and love."

All you are doing is enabling and being co-dependent. You need to fight for good lit. People on boats don't have wall to throw their bad books against. I suggest a good tanker when you get the chance.

OOoh,,, lookie what I found:

"London was vulnerable to accusations of plagiarism"

"Some critics have said that his novels are episodic and resemble linked short stories"

Re: Jack London - An Inspiring Example for Adventure

London made his money by selling episodes to newspapers. Nothing new there. Charles Dickens did the same.

He was born in Lancashire and educated in Scotland, and he would have spoken with that distinctive Canadian accent that was common still when I came here, and carried so much of Scotland in it.

Service was Kipling's junior by some ten years and was, not unnaturally, affected by Kipling's work given that the both reached the height of their productivity before it was realized, popularly, that the grandeur of the Victorian Age, the splendor of the Raj, and the "full spectrum dominance" of the time, residing in the RN were all in their death throes.

For all the protestations of the professional sages in the CanLit crowd, and their opposite numbers in AmLit, that neither Kipling nor Service "wrote poetry", both of them reflected the sentiments of the "common man" of their time and place, and gave voice to those sentiments in a form that thrilled the "common man" - and still thrills me :-)

TrentePieds
My favorite poem. Had to memorize it in grade eight. I've been at Lake LaBarge. When the wind blows, even in summer, it is flippin' COLD.
