It is True...are all Boats really always for Sale?

I was working on the boat sanding down the cabin top to bare fiberglass because of numerous crack in preparation to painting the decks. A guy came by and started asking questions about building a boat. We'd built the boat from a bare hull and were intimately aware of the time, labor, and money involved so tried to dissuade him from building. We talked about boat building, cruising, etc. for a bit but it was taking me away from the work at hand. To get rid of him and without much thought, I said why don't you buy our boat, paint the deck and go sailing. He took my number and left. About a week later he calls and says he wants to pursue buying the boat and mentioned a price higher than what I thought the boat was worth. Didn't take a lot of thought as our cruising days were over for a few years raising our two very young boys and it became our ex boat.

Just remind yourself that any given sailor is only happy with his boat for two days. The first day is when he buys her and the second day is when he sells her.

We haven't had such an offer but we do have a friend who sold his boat to an absolutely fixated buyer that wanted 'a Scandinavian quality boat'. That was in NZ and he got paid nearly twice of what they sell for in Sweden.

Now our friend has another boat of the same make and year ...

Life is good. If the price is right, sell her and pocket the difference.

Still, some boats are NOT for sale. Simply because some owners are not money-driven. One would not sell their partner, children or dog either, would they.

Except when sailing downwind amidst huge open ocean swells along a tradewind route towards a full moon late at night. Then you will be happy beyond happy.

In many parts of the world children are routinely sold by families, wives bartered for whatever, and even dogs are treated as commodities.

When I told my wife last night about the offer she didn't hesitate and asked....
"Was the offer enough for a nice big power boat? If not, tell the guy no and get that damn deck done".

Oh ****...Huston we have a problem.

I guess life is all about timing.
My daughter graduated this year and my son is now a senior in high school.
So we have a few years left here in Morro Bay before the next adventure begins.
If that next adventure is on this boat or another boat...who knows. But the thought of selling this boat after all the work and money we are pouring into her...well that's not a happy thought at this point. I've already done a boat swap mid-cruise game trading one totally finished and truly done boat for one that needed some work but was big enough to suit our liveaboard plans. The thought of "starting" over for a 3rd time...just isn't that exciting.

If we do ever buy another boat I can guarantee you this...it will have no outside teak...not even a F-ing trim piece!

I know people say that because it sounds cute...but anyone who actually owns a boat they love and have put sweat equity into it would disagree with that statement.
It's like when people (lookie-loos) tell me a boat is a hole in the water you pour money into, I ask them how that compares to their significant other.

This hackneyed saying is true only for those who follow misguided "go for it" advice here on CF and buy the wrong boat. Many (most?) of us love our boats, even when fixing the head or scraping the bottom. Maybe a little bit more at other times if I'm honest...

Your absolutely right...its hard not to really like a good vessel that has taken you safely across thousands of miles of ocean.

I don't need CF to make that mistake. Some boats have a good reputation that have questionable scantlings (and I'm being kind). Just to find out after the purchase that it was not the boat for me.

Strange thing...

I dont get attached to things. If I had a bright shiny new boat, it would always be for sale at the right price. Yet the older boats, the Centaurs, the Catalacs, the Heaveny twins I would probably keep forever simply because they are cheap enough to keep forever and have fun on.... Right now in the UK Catalacs are from $15K.... I saw a Centaur in excellent condition at $6K..There are a lot of 30+ foot monos from $12K .. why would you ever sell if you had one? a good coastal putput and a cheap vessel to have a good time on...

I dont envy the work that Rich is doing on his deck. It has to be done. once done its done....good for another few years. Just one of those things...
